Do I need a medium action Rod
I even throw down to a weightless senko on a MH/F baitcaster. The tat sv slings it a mile. Since then my medium baitcaster hasn't left the jeep once. You got your bases covered with a M spinning.

HLC vs SV Zillion
So because I'm an admitted daiwa fanboy now, I've been looking at spending tons of money I don't have on reels i absolutely don't need. Specifically the Zillion, I've been having a bit of trouble trying to find any information on the HLC spool, plagued with dead end links and websites I can't read (or that are translated and make zero sense). I know the SV spool incorporates a lighter material and heavier centrifugal shoes leading to earlier, stronger and longer brake engagement. I feel like I am at times over-braked using hard lures (but it certainly found a home on a plastics rod) and that's not really what I'm looking for. The JDM Zillion also comes in an HLC-spooled flavor, but i can't find anything about it. Is it a lighter spool with normal brakes? A heavy spool with no brakes? A magical spool with pixie dust brakes? Any of you guys used one? Sadly because of the short search strings Google and the forum search have come up a little short .

Weather to Lure
I can't help but notice that folks have their own favorites that wind up often way outside the accepted norms so such a table or chart would be really heavily biased by the person who wrote it in most cases. This time of year with hot sun and warm water I go to flipping jigs in the wood and when the mats come in, flipping t-rigs into and around the mats. PB&J for clear water B&B for stained or muddy. That #1 go to will be different for alot of people. When I head up to the river we have huge crazy thick mats and big stretches of rock bank. Everything goes out the window and all new stuff gets tied on. I love being up at the reservoir in 95 degree weather and having people give me crazy looks for tying on a lipless crank. It's a dumb idea until it ain't. Experimenting and trying to figure them out is half the fun. Likewise i know guys that will go out and fish an ice edge with a spinnerbaits. Often our desire to get bit on our favorite baits outweighs the common wisdom.

Finally found a jig bite!
Update... I incorrectly said i was using the wreckin craw. In fact it was the SAW craw and I just ordered 5 more bags. Crushed them again today on the jig! Easily my favorite bite of the year.

Best sqaurebill crankbait rod around $100
I guess I'm the odd man out, but then again I usually am ? depending on where I am squarebills get thrown on either 7'2" MHF on 10# YZH or a 7'5" MHF on 15# big game. I prefer the 7'2" rod with 15# big game but that limits my presentations with other baits. It gives me a ton of backbone either way and plenty of power to pull fish when they dart into grass mats while fishing edges or out of the wood when beating the bank. This has become especially true for the super shallow cranks like the 6th sense MVMT 80x... I almost wish I had 20lb flouro rigged up some days. I prefer a fast tip to snap the lures out of the grass when they get snarled up, not unlike lipless cranks... haven't had issues with hook up ratios. Both rigs have 7.3:1 reels. I absolutely throw spinner baits on one or both of these rigs depending on what else I have rigged up for the day. Chatterbaits I actually prefer throwing on a heavy rod, but i will use the 7'5" MHF with 15# big game often too. The fast tip and lower stretch help facilitate quick blade restart after pausing or hitting cover.

Looking for help picking saltwater gear
Hey gang. Im just this summer getting into saltwater fishing for the first time, I was hoping you folks could help point me in the right direction. I have a few friends who surf cast down in long island sound a few times a month after work, but we also have a river below the dam that's brackish with resident largemouth and stripers and i have a buddy who now has a boat on the sound. About the biggest fish in these waters is stripers and blues. I had a zany idea... to grab the daiwa BG5000 spinning combo with the 9 or 10 foot MH surf casting rod (well, that's what they call it, it's a shorter handle) to use on the brackish river and from the beach throwing circle hook bait rigs and jerk baits, then just getting a more stout shorter rod for when we head out on the boat hunting blues and stripers. Is a 5000 sized reel up to the task do you think? Is it a stupid idea to try to do both with one reel? I've saltwater fished only a handful of times and from a party boat with rental gear. Totally out of my element!

chatterbait rod help
This. The chatterbaits have a pretty large hook. Don't be afraid to give it a little extra tug on the retrieve to make sure the hook is buried. This can be especially important if the hook is getting a little rugged. I have alot of grass so I prefer fishing them with a fast tip, don't have any issues with fish coming unpegged. Just gotta make sure the hook is good to go and then drive it home.

Thin Braid wind knots - Tips / Suggestions for removing
I had this issue from time to time running 20lb PP on a baitcaster. If let's say I was drifting towards my cast and I got a collection of line in front of me not paying attention I could have this happen. Usually I could get the knot out, twice in one season I had to respool because i lost about 20%. Since then i have run YZH. I cant trust myself to pay attention!

The Daiwa roundup
I'd be happy to tell the world of the wonders of the shimanos and lews. Right now longevity is the only X factor. The tats have easier to use brakes and a fantastic price point. I was a fan of shimano and Abu baitcasters until my first daiwa. I call it how I see it! ?♂️ with that said, if anyone knows anyone at daiwa, I work for free steez gear lol I had an SV make noise on the cast... I replaced the bearing with one out of an abu in the brake sideplate. I cleaned the bearing and oiled it, put it in the abu that I stole the other bearing out of. A cleaning and oiling was all it needed. Maybe they need to go their QA game!

The Daiwa roundup
Thanks for the positive feedback folks. I'll admit I'm curious to see how the t-wing holds up. I don't like moving parts in excess but the parts explosions make it seem really pretty simple. Time will tell, but it doesn't really seem like there's a ton to go wrong with it. Like anything cleaning and maintenance will go a long way. As for the Fuego vs Tatula... the t-wing aside, the difference between the two is really just a level of refinement. The tat feels a little nicer in the hand but I'm hard pressed to find a big difference in quality. I will take them apart eventually but they're all new. I don't want to run the risk of losing a tiny screw under the dining room table just yet!

Looking for PFD Comfy Enough to Fish In
There's a difference between a $50 inflatable and a $250 inflatable. The cheaper ones use a dissolving card... they're the ones that go off once they get wet. The higher end ones have a pressure tripping mechanism. It's far more reliable and inflates when the vest is submerged past a certain point. We bought some cheaper ones for the fire department boat... the first time we hung them up to dry we came back the next morning to find we had to repack them all.

The Daiwa roundup
So there's alot of support these days for the latest daiwa line up, and with good reason. They've done a fantastic job of pushing out reels with great features to try to get some of the hobbiest market back at price points that are no doubt intended to get some of that entry level market back. Today was my first adventure with the Tatula SV, the Tatula, and the Fuego. I wanted to share my thoughts on all 3 to hopefully help someone trying to decide which one is for them. I changed things up a little bit and respooled all 3. My moving bait rod got the tatula with YZH 10#, my bottom rig got the SV with 15# big game and my flipping rod has the fuego with 15# YZH. This wound up being about the perfect arrangement. The Tatula.. The tatula replaced the SV on the moving bait rod. All around it worked well but at times I felt that it was over braked. In this role the standard tatula did exceedingly well. Quiet, smooth and throws absolute bombs. I have to say that it feels a bit more refined in the hand than the casitas it replaced. I threw a 10' or so medium diving yozuri crank and the 7.3:1 had plenty of snot, I never felt overgeared. The SV... I put this on my bottom contact rig because if I were to throw a weightless anything, it would be here. I spent the day throwing a 1/4oz t-rig and 1/2oz c-rig. Something I hadn't considered, the floppy nature during casting of plastics was tamed pretty handily by the SV spool and brakes. Even when the c-rig went butt over tea kettle on the cast the spool never got unruly and a quick tap of the thumb sent the c-rig into the water nice and neat. I would say it has a slightly more refined feel in the hand than the regular tatula, but it's very minor. I feel like the chrome thumb bar helps with the feel and presentation, even if it's still the same plastic underneath. Also, I never once had an unruly spool using the 15# big game which is a feat in and of itself. The fuego.. Ahhh the Fuego. I used it to throw a 3/8 jig and craw literally all day. I did some pretty impressive hook sets to get a few of those tanks out of the wood.... the Fuego never skipped a beat. I ran the brakes a little hotter than I normally would just to keep the spool from getting unruly during pitching, but once I made that adjustment I had zero issues. The reel launched the jig out of sight when I ran it along grass edges. Definitely lacks some of the refinement in the hand of the other two, but to be honest not by a whole lot. I think the twing equipped reels have an edge but I definitely didn't feel limited by the traditional style line guide. While it looks like it was spray painted, the matte black finish so far has been more durable than the tatula finish. I kinda wish they all had it! Definitely the best value of the bunch, if not my favorite. This reel is in 8.1:1 and even when I was swimming the jig in, I never felt overgeared or under handled. I hope this helps someone make their choice!

Reel Upgrade
During the last round of eBay sales a couple months ago I will not picking up a Shimano Sahara on an Impulse buy because it was super cheap. I gotta say I absolutely love it. Casts well, manages line really well. I have been switching to all Daiwa stuff lately but that one is there to stay.

Finally found a jig bite!
I often throw finesse jigs, but only if I'm not getting bit on full bodied jigs. I never considered skirtless jigs with craws... a finesse finesse jig ? I got an order I gotta make from TSD this week, I gotta add some more craws and some arky heads. Good suggestion! Thanks

Finally found a jig bite!
I just wanted to share. I haven't caught anything on a jig aside from swim jigs and chatterbaits. Thing is it's easily my favorite bait to throw. All spring long I flipped till I can't see straight... not a single bite. UNTIL TODAY! Flipping hard cover and edges of emergent grass in a foot of water give or take. Bottom comp didn't seem to matter, sparse vegetation. Hot, almost no wind, sparse cloud cover. THUMP! Not alot of bites, but they were all north of 2lbs so it could always be worse! Made me a happy boy. Jewel 3/8 flippin jig, PB&J with a catch co wreckin craw bit down.

in search of larger soft creature baits.
I use alot of missle baits d bomb. They aren't really huge but they have a really big profile. I love them as a flipping bait.

Line break in middle of cast?
This is exactly why I don't use straight flouro. I switched to YZH and this stuff stopped happening.

How many carry while out fishing in the boat.
I can fit my XDS on my belt in my kayak cockpit. So I do! There's occasionally unsavory characters about, but i once watched a beaver chase a guy in a coanoe. Cornered him in a cove on the bank surrounded by large rocks. Turned into hand to hand.. or rather paddle to tail combat. Funniest thing I've ever seen, but it could have messed him up.

In the market for a baitcaster rod/reel combo under 100$? Any favorites?
Owned the blackmax, silvermax and orra sx. The orra sx combo (not sure what it was replaced with) only retailed for $90. The orra is the only one that made it more than one or two seasons without a serious breakdown, in fact it's still going strong. Sadly there are a bunch of other reels out there that out class it in features though. I just can't recommend them for the money.

Would you rather have more rods than reels, or more reels than rods?
I have more reels than rods for swapping out line. I actually need to get one more Fuego. I want to spool one with straight 65lb power pro so If I get to a lake with lots of mats and pads I can swap out the YZH on my flipping rod. It's a benefit because I can't stand braid when I don't absolutely need it. Right now my braid swap out reel is a kastking stealth which feels like a lawn mower next to my tatula sports cars.

Fuego CT Equipment Monkey!
I should also add that unless I misread the details of the promotion, you can use the code for multiple items in the same order. What I mean by that is you can probably still pick up a $58 Fuego as long as you throw in a couple extra dollars worth of line or lures or whatever to hit the $75 mark before the discount. Hope that helps some of you get into new gear!
