  1. This one saved me from the skunk today. Luckily for me I planned ahead and picked up some crawlers yesterday as my day off sadly landed on the 1st clear blue sky day of our next heatwave. Sadly no luck with the bass today. Guess I should have weighed it and measured it. The hook was stuck in the roof of it's mouth and took longer than anticipated to get out and I wanted to get it back into the water. Figure it was around a pound or so. Never fish for them so I guess it would be a PB of unknown weight.
  2. I don't have a titan but have a slayer 10 and I like it. Search YouTube for titan vs hobie and you'll find lots of videos.
  3. I'll play around with it and see, maybe it don't work with the Navionics card. I've been using my C-Map card that came with my Elite Ti. Got to go to work and didn't have time to try it out on the Navionics + card I also have. The Navionics card shows a lot of detail for Lake Perris but parts of the lake have been reconstructed during dam repairs. The C-Map has more options that I like and my custom map is more accurate in the areas that I mentioned. Couldn't find a custom contour color option in Navionics but didn't play with it much. C-Map allows me to choose my own colors/shading and once applied I can find all the 10-15ft water instantly if that's were the fish are biting. I'll let you know if it will work on the Navionics card and how to do it if I can figure it out.
  4. The file you downloaded is a zip file. Just unzip it and then rename the folder to Square Pond. Then all you have to do is right click the folder and send it to the SD card. Your Hook 4 should find it on boot up and a popup message will ask you if you want to change to Square Pond. Just wait for the popup. On your Genesis account you should be able to just click on the upload tab in top center under the lake image. Or the start upload above the social map box. I know it will allow you to upload without upgrading your account as I uploaded a couple of sonar logs before I upgraded my account. You could try the upload tool. Same logon for it as your account. There is a link below the image showing were to find it on your account dashboard if you don't see it on your dashboard. https://insightgenesis.wordpress.com/2016/03/23/how-to-install-the-insight-genesis-upload-tool-on-a-pc/
  5. Why don't you just use the free community map from c-map genesis? They already have most of it mapped out already. You can just sign up for the free account add your sonar info and download the community map. Then you could upload logs to update missing parts of it. Once your files are uploaded and processed they are added to the community map after a day or two. You will be able to download a gpx file that you should be able to upload to navionics + from your free account. I'm not 100% sure on the download gpx file from free account as I upgraded my account so I could just make my own map of my local lake with the areas I want or will be fishing. I kayak fish also and have generated over 600 acres so far on my map. I had to zoom out chrome and zoom down the map to get a decent compromise of what it shows. It has greater details once you zoom in on the map. Community map might be good enough for you from the getgo. You can always add to it to make it better. I can help you figure it out if it winds up being too confusing. Reading what you already did I'd think you'll figure it out by yourself.
  6. I'm not sure. I guess one would have to experiment with it to see what the reel and your thumb can handle. I guess it would depend on how far you wanted to cast it in the end. Shorter casts probably wouldn't be to bad while longer casts might make your thumb smoke depending on lure weight.
  7. I'm right handed so naturally I cast right, switch left, reel right as it feels like second nature to me. I've always done it this way. I swapped the handles on my spinning reels as left handed felt unnatural too me. The switch from right to left happens just after the lure hits the water anyways. I haven't really tried left handed casting. It could come in handy at times I guess. I kayak fish so I just reposition and cast with my right. I fish sitting down which already is somewhat of a handicap. I've caught the majority of my larger bass(4-5lbs) on longer casts that require accuracy. My left hand just aint up to that standard as I have to tell it what to do while my right hand just does it....if that make any sense.
  8. I use 30lb braid on my Abu Revo MGX SHS with my 6'6" medium rod. I like to set my spool tension to a couple clicks beyond no spool wiggle and brake to minimum and use my thumb to control backlash and depth as needed. I have a lot of hours using the reel so backlash isn't a concern for me. Takes good eye thumb coordination that comes with lots and lots of practice. Works for me better than setting it up the way one is suppose to. If fish aren't biting I'll just do some target practice working on depth my depth perception.
  9. A longer heavy action rod won't increase your casting distance. Most likely it'll decrease it. For me at least my 6'6" medium fast action rod casts farther with more accuracy than my 7' MH fast action rod. Using a 1/2oz lipless crankbait as a comparison. Medium action gives somewhat more slingshot effect I guess. Doesn't sound like your throwing anything heavy enough for the listed rods. Have you tried tuning your reel for more distance on your current setup?
  10. If I was to set a hard limit on rods and reels it would probably be something like $100 a rod and $150 a reel. I won't pay full retail price for either one so the hard limit isn't too low. Just got to wait for the right deal or deals to get the most value for the money. I'd up the limit on either one for the right deal. My most expensive combo would be my Abu Garcia Revo MGX SHS pared with a Abu Garcia Vendetta Next Gen 6' 6" medium fast rod. Got the reel on a 1 day BPS deal in late 2016 for $175 and bought the rod at retail but had a gift card to offset the price. I did look at more expensive rods but wound up with the Vendetta as I liked the feel of it in my hand....Combo feel more like an extension of my arm than a rod and reel. lol 2nd most expensive combo would be the BPS CarbonLite 2.0 baitcaster 7' Medium Heavy Fast combo I picked up back in Feb when BPS had them on sale for $120.
  11. Carp come in many shapes and sizes. I've seen hundreds if not thousands of them in Lake Perris. They travel the lake like a swarm of bees at times. If the lake is calm you can easily spot the schools of carp roaming around by the ripples and the tips of their backs. Choppy water not so easy to spot unless their banging the brush or you cast into them as they'll scatter. May 30th I was fishing for bass and actually caught one. I was skimming the tops of a submerged brushline with a lipless crankbait and got a tap, tap followed by the traditional larger bass slam. It fought really hard and zigzagged back and forth while pulling my kayak around. I was thinking I hooked my new PB bass! When I finally got it up to the kayak in lipping or netting range it saw me and dove deep for round 2. I was bummed out when I 1st saw it as by then I had my heart set on a new PB bass. It was a really good fight in the end. Probably the best and longest I've fought a fish. I heard they really fight hard if you foul hook one of them. Mine clearly went after the lipless as it had 2 barbs of the rear treble inside it's mouth....In the end it was still a new PB as it's the only one I've caught. The one I caught was only 5.93lbs and was shaped more like a channel catfish.
  12. If I lived about 4-500 miles more north I'd seriously consider throwing a high dollar swimbait for the chance of catching a world record class spotted bass. I'd be out there every possible moment....Just me, my kayak and a whole lot of hope and prayers. Fish of a lifetime outlays the risk too me at least.
  13. That would be too many to count. Those are some interesting videos for sure. Kind of eye opening to some extent. Too bad the visual quality of them is so dated. On another note I really like to throw the lipless crankbaits in areas that are what I call snag city so I tend to let the fish do all the work as far as setting the hook. I really hate to get snagged as most of the time I throw my lure there because it looks like a fish worthy spot. That and I kayak fish so I really have no leverage to pull my snags out. I have to peddle over and retrieve my lures which kills the spot in my mind. What did I learn from the video....I've probably lost more than a few larger bass as more than once I've felt what feels like a tap or two at times but chalked it up as hitting a stick or other cover. After watching the videos and seeing the suck and spit over and over it makes me wonder what I've lost in the end. Time for some Jedi lure training I guess....Be one with the lure! lol
  14. I'm going with the carp camp.
  15. Interesting. They do look like nice lures. If you search ebay for morone swimbaits you can see a lot of them with higher quality images if you haven't already done that. moroneswimbaits is the ebay store. Guess you could read the feedback and then decide if it's a good deal too you.
  16. This thread went a different direction than the title lead me to believe....Figured it was a typo for maroon as in the color. No I've never heard of them before either.
  17. ....That and the heaviest one you want to lug in and out of the boat. Some of those batteries can be really heavy and depending on a persons age, physical strength, etc may be a no go.
  18. Once in a while when needed I'll make the run to my local BPS. I really like the atmosphere that they have going on. The selection is decent as long as your not going during black friday or around xmas. Not really a fan of the way they organize the fishing department as it's pretty confusing. Maybe it's so a person will look around and possibly find things that they're not looking for....Impulse buying? BPS pricing is really hit and miss. A person needs to really wait it out for sales. Good deals can be had sometimes. Free shipping deals and the online only 6 pay option to split up bigger purchases is a plus. Picked up the CarbonLite 2.0 baitcaster combo when it was on sale for $120. Too good of a price to pass up. Got my Abu Garcia Revo MGX SHS for $175 on a 1 day special back around black friday of 2016. Pretty much close to 50% off at the time....Of course it went on clearance for $199 a month or so later as the new line came out. Decent deals can be had if one has the patience to wait it out. I always compare prices before buying anywhere anyways.
  19. They do sell painters pole to camera adapters which would allow you more options as far as length goes at least. A basic fixed mount on amazon is $20 you probably already have a gopro mount for a standard tripod I'd assume.
  20. I caught my 1st and only carp 5.93lbs on May 30th while bass fishing. I was using a lipless crankbait fishing across the top of a submerged brushline when it hit. It slammed the lure pretty hard and dove deep while zigzagging back and forth fought it for a couple of minutes while it pulled my kayak around. i really thought it was going to be my new PB Bass until I got a really good look at it....Guess in the end it's still a PB just the wrong species.
  21. Maybe if you stated what finder you have and how you guys were unsuccessful someone could possibly point you in the right direction. I'm still a newb as I only took up fishing again last year and have only really played around with my finder for a couple of months. Mine has side imaging so I'd probably just use that if the vegetation wasn't grown up to the surface yet.
  22. I've got spinnerbaits and buzzbaits along with some trailer hooks....Now if I could only get myself to throw them once in a while I'd be able to decide if I need the trailer hooks or not. Gonna have to make a mental note to at least try them out sometime or another. Not really sure why I don't use them as the largest bass I've ever hooked and sadly lost was on a spinnerbait way back in the late 80's....Don't remember if I had a trailer hook or not as it was many moons ago. I can to this day still visualize it, remember exactly what happened and see the huge bass getting away from me....Dang nammit! Thanks for making me relive the horror of that day!
  23. Sounds like a lot of stuff to throw into a trash bag and carry around. Wanting something that clips to your belt and isn't too bulky while allowing you to carry everything you listed limits the options. Have you looked at soft bait binders? Seems like you could adapt one for your needs . Walmart sells one for $10 that is Okeechobee Fats branded which isn't too bulky and has a loop for attaching a belt clip. You could store some of the stuff you listed in the pages and some in the zippered web pouch on the lid. You'd probably want to pick up 1 or 2 little plastic Plano or Flambeau boxes to drop in to hold crankbaits or for your hooks and weights, etc. I'd imagine the spinnerbaits would sit flat enough to store in a page. Here's a couple photos of it to give you an idea to determine if it would work for you or not. Seems like it would too me at least. I don't keep the box in the zippered pouch....Just put there for the photo for illustration purposes.
  24. I picked up some Yamamoto's at Walmart when they had them on clearance back in Feb for $5 each. Seemed like a good deal to me. Haven't seen any at my local Walmart's lately. Took a photo of what I bought the 1st time so I didn't wind up buying the same ones again as I decided to check out my other local Walmart for more clearance lures.
  25. I just kind of slowly reel into it as I lift my rod and if I feel something then I'll set the hook if needed. Really depends on what you've been catching and what your using for bait. Sometimes just reeling in and turning is enough to set the hook if were talking little guys like bluegill, crappie, and other panfish. Guess with a sharp hook just about any fish. Caught 3 channel cats up to 6lbs last year with #16 treble hook before while bluegill fishing this way. I wouldn't set the hook as I'd just reel in and turn away from the fish to load the rod which set the hook once the fish realized it was hooked and made a run for it . If fish misses the first shot the bait doesn't get jerked rapidly away.
