Does my rod suck, or is just not right for what I'm using it for
This will come with time and experience, and now that you have the language you'll be able to fully grasp the concept. Once you've processed this, eventually you won't even have to think about it at all. You'll auto-calibrate by the bait's loading of the rod with it simply hanging off the rod's tip before the cast. You'll automatically adjust the proper length of the lure's drop from the tip, the energy of the cast, and your release point. It'll all come together, then it'll be executed unconsciously. Sort of like walking. All of that, while important, is generally less important with spinning gear. You can often fudge it along here with less than optimal bait to rod mixes, but it becomes quite important if you make the move to bait casters and you'd like to avoid being a backlash machine, and inaccurate during target casting.

Anyone use quantum smoke s3 pt baitcaster?
Me too. So does my brother, Other than the nomenclature, there's very little difference between 3.0 and 4.0. I'd skip the Accurist, but not because it's a bad reel, because it's quite good actually. If you don't mind a reel weighing in at Curado K territory of 8oz, then the ICON PT is the one to get for frogs. If you're thinking of absolutely bombing standard 5/8oz frogs and above, you'll be able to do so with this reel in the equation on a typical 7'3' rod. My brother had his on a light swimbait setup for months before I could convince him to try it on his frog stick. He called me giggling once he tried. Couldn't believe the distance and consistency, and the ICON replaced his K for frog duty. On very low brake settings, and with high arc power casts, the ICON is simply less touchy than the K, IMO. You can find new ones on the auction site for low$. Brass main gear. Double supported pinion and crankshaft. Shielded cir-clip type NB bearings throughout. Good drag. They've been on the shelf for a few years, so lube the crankcase, clutch mech, and and spool bearings. Lube the brake ring on schedule and they'll be fine. I have 2 myself, and at least one is always with me and is always fished. Rock solid after plenty of fish, usually on baits like Magdraft Freestyles with 6/0 Beast hooks, not only frogs.

Anyone use quantum smoke s3 pt baitcaster?
They're not. Same as above, I have a Tour S3. Oil the conical brass brake ring found in the beetle wing side plate every 4th outing. The blocks will seat eventually and it'll change to a hum over time. This Quantum, like some Lew's models and most Shimanos, has friction brakes. Daiwa does not, so it makes little sound, but all friction brakes do. Anyway, the S3 is a great reel that punches well above its price point.

It's nice to have shopping options now.
Just got this email. So, finally shipping 9 days after the order was placed. Probably won't actually ship until tomorrow. Asinine, and I ordered some of those all-in-stock specific baits for a lake I plan on, or now had planned on, fishing this Saturday. WoW. Awesome. .

Best practices for fishing senkos in heavy milfoil?
Nope. 2020 Lew's Tournament Pro LFS, 30lb Daiwa J8-Braid, 13 Omen Black 2 7'3" MHF. The rod leans toward the heavy side though.

Why you should never go fishing without a spinning rod
I'm able to dropshot just fine with a few of my BC setups, and do when I have to, but it causes me the same dull mental anguish I get from being forced to watch reality TV chunky reflux like the fake housewives or other such voyeuristic lunacy.

No, no, no. That's the easy time. Broad daylight.

So meet me at the big bass spot of your choice in Nassau during the second half of August and show me the way, King Salami. Don't forget to eat your antidepressants before you leave.

150$ crankbait rod
I have several models of Omen Black 2s, so they're full cork models instead of split grips, and 30T blanks instead of 36T. They've been perfectly reliable being fished in overgrown water for the past 5 years, and I'm pleased with them all around. No complaints at the asking price,

Walmart lews rods as a frog rod?
We have that version too. No problem socking in an 8/0 Owner Beast hook, so frogs are easy. Even though the 7'3" HF is rated to 1oz, I've thrown baits as high as 1 3/4oz as hard as I could with it without issue. It's way under rated on the label.

Does my rod suck, or is just not right for what I'm using it for
You can, and I do use backing, but I use braid. I have about a mile of 50lb I use for backing on just about every reel I own. However, I use 200 feet of mainline. Once it gets a little low for my liking I remove it, add some more backing, then respool it. back on. The upshot of using braid for backing is that the connection knot to the mainline is less bulky than if you choose heavier mono as a backer.

True, it's massive, but it's mostly a whole bunch of nothing until the last page in a half where just a few people actually grabbed one and have sort of used them. I've been following since it started. You'll get no argument from me on this one. The 36mm tall wide spool is a real plus for easy distance casting. It's a great platform. However, if our OP is neurotic about absolute smoothness, the '22 Zillion is a level higher. On par or maybe better than an out of the box Met B. We're pretty much doing the same thing, so I get it. One of the posters over there dropped in the Catalina's Mag Z spool into their '18 Zillion HD. Have you? It's a very fast spool. Easy casting and can really bomb for super distance. Again, we're talking about 2 guys or so. I'm not sure what they mean. My standard Zillion G is rock solid. I've used far less solid feeling standard reels like a Quantum ICON PT for the same purpose on a 7'3H and they've held up just fine throwing and retrieving high resistance big billed crank down wake baits. Line cap hasn't been an issue either with 20lb Big Game mono on its 34mm spool. Agree, especially with a 7' rod. I seriously doubt he'll ever exceed a 150' cast at the most unless he's 7' tall.

Does my rod suck, or is just not right for what I'm using it for
Yes, I understand that point. I bought my shallow spool CXH for the same reason, and not the deeper D version. P.S. I've gotten exactly 1 wind knot in 4 years. My fault throwing an elaztec french fry and allowed loose spooling.

If your spool isn't filled, or if it's a bit low, the line will be fighting its way off. Spool lip friction becomes a bigger factor as line gets deeper on the spool on a cast and from re-tying.,@bulldog1935 has better pics of a filled spool than this old existing attachment shown here, but this is the idea,

Walmart lews rods as a frog rod?
The Lew's Carbon fire 7'3" H DSG exclusive is a fantastic frog rod. My brother, who buys whatever he wants, grabbed one in a rush and loved it. Lent it to me, said what he thought about it, and he was right. On sale right now for $49.99 down from $70. Also, it cannot be killed. I've tried,

My lighter weight SB setup is an iRod Jr. Swimbait 7'8" with a 7 spd JDM Catalina TW 100, which is just the previous gen and still available Zillion HD, but with a Mag-Z brake. The "100" designation is meaningless. It holds more line than a Curado K 200. I love this setup. No problem switching right over from 3 oz swimbaits to chatterbaits, jigs, big worms, or whatever's in the usable range of the rod. Unlike most swim bait rods, the Jr has a conventional handle length, so common baits are workable. The TB is similar in that respect. The new Zillion G is magical. I know that sounds like hyperbole, but you'll understand if you get one. However, the non-HD model won't cut it regarding line cap when using 20lb fluoro or mono. This is where the T-wing really shines. Heavy plastic lines just fly right through with zero friction It's something you have to feel to understand. The '22 HD's deeper spool should cut it if you stick with the 7spd and aren't looking to unload the spool on every cast, not that this would be easy anyway with the TB's length. By the numbers the Catalina's spool cap shouldn't be enough, but it's plenty, especially if you're not dogmatic about IPT. I'm not, and this hasn't hurt me in any way using glides, etc. The fact that this combo is super versatile over a wide range of baits makes up for any theoretic penalty regarding retrieve rates after a long cast. I'd say it's worth a shot. You only live once.

The rod's probably not helping your cause if it's a true heavy fast. I can throw a full size spook a bleedin' mile using a Tatula XT 7' MF/Tatula LT3000 CXH spooled with 15lb PP Super Slick. How's the reel spooled? Filled right up to the lip?
