Light line on baitcasters
You'll be just fine. I've caught lots of 5lb+ smallies on 6lb mono. Set your drag right and play the fish.

Anyone bought a reel through eBay (China)
Shop the Japanese sites, they already have nice deals and most will get your order to you within a week. I've had rods and reels come from Japan in as little as two days. Compare that with China and you could be waiting more than a month and possibly receive a knockoff.

Line recommendation for old Abu 4600C reel
You should probably service that reel before you put it on the water. Those 4600Cs are awesome reels but having sat around that long, the old grease is surely to be putty. Flush and oil the bearings, get some lighter fiber brake blocks, upgrade the drag to Carbontex, and clean and lube everything else and it'll be brought back to life. If you need any replacement parts, you can get them from Jerry Foran at hookless.com

Abu Garcia Zenon
I just ordered a Revo ALC BF7 from Amazon Japan last night, came out to $170-ish after shipping. Smoking deal for an ultralight baitcast reel. Comes in at 5oz on the scale too.

Your favorite bluegill lure?
1/32 or 1/64 ice jig with a 1" Gulp Alive minnow under a slip float, very deadly.

Old Baitcasters still worth buying?
The spool on the 1600 weighs 14g with bearings, brake blocks, clutch washer, and clutch retainer installed.

Old Baitcasters still worth buying?
It doesn't really share much with the Morrum other than the smaller size and one piece aluminum frame. Mechanically, it's more like an Ambassadeur but with a disengaging level wind and a low reel seat.

Anyone else not fish for bass very often?
I fish trout most of the time, but I still love bass fishing, just not as much as I used to. I love the sense of adventure that comes with hiking the backcountry to that good trout hole, something you don't get in bass fishing. The serenity coupled with the sounds of nature and the lack of traffic is as relaxing as it gets. Most of the time I'm fishing trout, I see nobody else out there other than the person or people accompanying me. The most rewarding experience comes in early to middle spring. Walking along those game trails, stumbling upon a patch of morels, then catching a limit of brook trout. The meal itself is almost as good as the adventure of obtaining it. Brookies pan fried in bacon grease with a side of sauteed morels, you'll never find that in a restaurant. Sometimes you pay with blood, especially late spring into summer when the mosquitoes are active, but man can it be surreal at times.

reel gear lube
Yamalube marine grease sticks the best to gears in my experience.

One fishing line... FOREVER
Maxima is my line too. 4lb and 6lb on my lighter power rigs, 8lb to 12lb on my casting outfits.

How Big on a UL?
My biggest UL fish was an 11lb steelhead I got on a 5' UL and 4lb Stren. It was a holdover hen, caught in early May while fishing for brown trout. It put up a good fight for about a minute and kind of tuckered out after.

How many “main” setups do you have?
Being that I fish salmonids mostly, I'll list those. I don't really have any bass specific setups, but I do use mine for bass as well. I'll list my favorites and what I do with them. Daiwa Alphas Air Stream Custom mounted on a Major Craft Troutino 4'10" and spooled with 4lb Ultragreen. I use this fishing trout in brush choked headwaters. It's very light and sensitive, plus it's super easy to cast in close quarters. I can cast from my ankle and fire it right where I need it. Probably my favorite to use, also a riot catching panfish. I have yet to catch a bass on this one. Daiwa Alphas CT SV, RCS SV700S shallow spool, mounted on a Kuying Teton TTC662L. I use this trout fishing the main tributaries with space isn't as constrained. The faster currents of those tributaries necessitates a heavier rod, and a light power is preferable over an ultralight on those streams. This one is spooled with 15lb Power Pro. It's a joy to use on big browns and rainbows as well as bass and panfish. I had a ball last weekend fishing a park on Lake St Clair throwing little 1.5" grubs on a 1/16 head, caught 8 largemouth, a couple white bass, and a few good sized bluegill. None of the bass were very big, about 10" to 14", but still good fishing. Daiwa Fuego CT, Ray's Studio long cast spool, 7' Lamiglas LX702ULC. I like this one fishing small plugs like Hot n Tots, Hot Shots, small Husky Jerks, and 1/8 to 1/4 spoons and spinners for steelhead. I've landed fish up to 11lb on it and it handles them no problem. Also my favorite combo to use wading the shores of Lake Huron for smallmouth. I can whip it out there good.

Any hidden online gems can you recommend?
I've never had an issue buying anything new, just that one and only time I bought the Fuego as a return in new condition.

Any hidden online gems can you recommend?
I got skunked on a Fuego CT I bought like that. Thumb bar was stuck in the down position and wouldn't return when the crank was turned. Sent it right back.

I use my finesse rigs for trout more than anything. My Alphas CT is used on a Kuying Teton 662L for fishing the main rivers while my ASC is mounted on a Major Craft Troutino 4'10" and used on the brush choked creeks and headwaters. Most of the baits I throw are 2g to 4g.

I'm not sure if it's Zaion or aluminum as I have yet to take it apart. You can get the Alphas CT for ~$220 on Asian Fishing Portal. Additionally, the RCSB SV700S spool was just released about a month ago, mine should be here today.

Shakespeare had some good reels
I still keep bail springs as I service a good amount every year. That's about the only part I usually see give out on them.

Abu Garcia really disheartened me today
Same. The thing I don't get though, the Penns definitely are overbuilt, but at the same time the other Pure Fishing spinning reels at the same price point typically don't offer what you get in a Penn. For instance, the President vs the Fierce III. With the Pflueger, you get a graphite frame and the old school oiled felt drag. With the Fierce, you get all metal construction and the carbon fiber HT100 drag.

Sometimes you get a lemon, even on reputable products. It stinks, but at least you're back to fishing again and can enjoy your new reel.

I have that same reel, what a nice piece. I should have my RCSB SV700S shallow spool sometime this week. Ordered from Digitaka. Running mine on a JDM Daiwa Bass X 64LB-Y 1/16-3/8.- Which Discontinued tackle would you love to see back?
While I do know a few are still made, I'd like to see more reels come with a flipping switch as they're outstanding when it comes to jigging musky and walleye. It's so easy to hit the thumb bar to let out more line without having to crank the handle to re-engage the spool. A customer of mine runs a walleye charter on the Detroit River, most reels on his boat have a flipping switch because of how good they are for vertical jigging. Perhaps the manufacturers could change the name to "jiggin' switch".- Anyone else not fish for bass very often?
I used to fish musky often 20 some years back. A friend of mine fished the musky tournaments back then and I was always out there with him for his pre-tournament warm-ups, even fished a couple of tournaments with him. The musky fishing is outstanding. There are so many in the lake you're pretty much guaranteed to get one or more if you book a charter or go with a good musky fisherman. I have been wanting to get a kayak, and I could fish the mile roads (in St Clair Shores) pretty well in one.- General line questions
Sufix Advance is good stuff, but it can be a little thick. Another good one is Maxima Ultragreen, that's one of my favorites. It tends to be thinner than many other monofilaments of comparable listed strength. It's also very supple and highly abrasion resistant.- Bought nib curado 200 today 50.00
Nice score. You can have some very good luck at estate sales and garage sales. Which model is it? - Show off your Stuff
