  1. Guess I should have mentioned that. Looking at a 2000 size possibly 2500. Don't want bigger than that though. Any thoughts on what IPT I should be looking for? I think most of the reels I've been eyeing up start at like 26"
  2. Looking at getting a new spinning reel for my custom rod. I will be using it primarily for smaller crankbaits. Would it be better to find something like 6.2:1 so I can slow down my retrieve if needed? Or is better to just get like a 5.2:1? I plan on using small lipless, Frittsides, Original Floating Rapalas, Strike King Bitsy, etc, etc. Tight lines!
  3. Is it really saving money? 3 types on line when you could just run a heavy mono. I've seen some pretty interesting videos on the topic of flourocarbon invisibility. One thing is for sure, mono is tried and true
  4. Does anyone know how the size of the Penn reels run? For example my size 30 Presidents run closer to a 20.
  5. I don't personally throw swimbaits and only use braid to mono/flourocarbon for soft plastics, drop shot, ned rigs or small jigs for panfish. Easier to see the bite on hi-vis braid. Why are you using braid to leader? Have you tried just running straight mono or flourocarbon? Probably not very helpful, but sometimes simplicity is better.
  6. I'm always on the hunt to improve a lot of aspects of my fishing game. I was using a uni to uni knot as I found it was the easiest for me to tie. Looked up the Crazy Alberto on YT and went and tried it out. Seems a little smaller than the uni to uni knot. I think I will continue to use this knot until I can figure out another one. I have tried the FG knot but I can't seem to get it right. Seems like it would be a much easier to tie with a heavy leader, but I'm not using heavy line. The only reason I use braid to a leader is simply for line visibility. I also like how braid floats on the water. I can detect bites simply by how the braid starts to move on the surface of the water. I'm pretty stoked about this, however insignificant it may seem to others. Just wanted to share my joy! Tight lines. Still waiting for open water here in central Wisconsin (at least on the small lakes and ponds that are easily accesible to me).
  7. I really like the look of the Penn Pursuit IV. Not sure I'm a big fan of the handle. Is that a part that can be switched out? Or are there too many variations such as threads, length of the screw, etc?
  8. I can't find any of the Penns in a 2000 size in that color. 2500, maybe it's not that much bigger
  9. I'm having a custom rod built that is going to be black. Guides are black with polished inserts, reel seat is a standard Fuji with chrome colored whatever those things are called, polished chromish winding check. I would like to find a spinning reel to match. Primarily black with chrome/silver accents. I would like a size 2000. Do you have one that comes to mind? I have looked but not really finding one in that size. TIA and tight lines!
  10. I've heard many people "pros" say tie whatever knot you are comfortable tying. If you are comfortable tying a uni to uni, then that is going to be the best knot you can tie. This doesn't just apply for main line and leader knots
  11. I'm also just ordering from Mudhole to make things easier. The CRB SSR Match guide kits are not rated with a "duty". Actually, looking at it again it's probably just the difference in the series. The ones that are rated "light" and "medium" are from the LZR line of guides.
  12. Ok. I'm also wondering because of the price. the SSR Match guides are like 8 bucks and the light duty are like 30
  13. Ok. Are light and medium duty guides just stronger? They are built quite a bit different, that much I know.
  14. Either you didn't the thread or troll.
  15. Somehow I ended up talking with a local guy who builds rods and now I'm in the process of ordering parts for a build. I'm going with a CRB FIS781ML. Going to be primarily used for smaller crankbaits, jerkbaits, or other smaller treble hook applications. I'm looking at the CRB SSR Match style kit, which seem to be a plain Jane kind of guide. Would it be better to get a medium or light duty kit? I just don't want there to be any issues. Thanks for your time. Tight lines
  16. Interesting. I would have thought they would have been carbon fiber. Maybe that's something I could do to them. They feel like they have a decent drag system. Did you notice anything significant when you made the switch? I have a President and President XT in size 30 for my bass setups and a President in size 20 on my UL jig setup. Need one more drop shot setup.
  17. Like previously mentioned, BPS web site says it has a carbon fiber drag. I dont have an issue with my Pfluegers or Daiwa reel either, but I think they have significantly more drag washer than this one. I understand what you are saying, but I also don't know these things, which is why I'm asking and thinking out loud so to speak. If I knew what I was suggesting would cause issues, I wouldn't bring them up
  18. I don't think I'm beating a dead horse. If I can fix the issue with something that will cost me a couple bucks, I'm game to try it. My other gear in the 50-70 dollar range doesn't seem to have this issue. After looking at some schematics of the schematics for my other reels, I think before I buy a new reel that will be something to look at. The BPS only has two drag "washers" while others seem to have significantly more. I buy what I can afford and maybe this time I just purchased the wrong reel.
  19. Thanks for your input. I'll probably just have play with it some. Maybe I've been making too big of adjustments on the drag and that's why it seems to go one way or the other.
  20. I never close the bail with the rotation of the handle. If I found steel and carbon fiber that aren't as thick as the current ones, could it be advantageous to add more?
  21. Would changing the steel one to carbon fiber help anything?
  22. According to their website it's a carbon fiber drag system.
  23. I didn't check that. I just figured that's the way it is. Any particular grease I should be using? I did get a Reel Butter kit last year for some of my other reels, not sure if any of that stuff would work.
  24. Ok. Just wanted to make sure I was clear. I know it's certainly not a high end reel by any means, but it also wasn't cheap. It's a $50 reel, regardless of the name on it, I would feel that for $50 you should be able to get a nice reel without problems like that
