Outfitting a NuCanoe Unlimited
I'm still using it, it is nice to have it to lean on. But remember I am double haul flycasting 80' plus. If you are using a spinning or bait casting rod you probably moving a whole lot less... What I like about how the Nucanoe fly rod holders is that everything is below the gunwales. I just think it is safer than any other holder I have seen.

I built one up with the nucanoe motor mount and a rudder from amazon. It still is a work in progress but it has promise.

On youtube there is a guy who has twin skegs on his unlimited. I hate the track mounted seat base too, so put the quick release kit on the seat. Problem fixed.

I think moving forward might have an impact on tracking. I have been less happy than I had hoped about the tracking of the kayak. The stern scoots around and tends to make the boat fishtail at cruising speed. To counteract this, I try to sit as far back towards the stern as I can which helps a bit but is not a complete fix. I had started to set up a skeg to see if that would be a final fix when I messed up my shoulder and haven't been out fishing since. I weigh about 195. I have heard that heavier folks have less of a problem with this. Best of luck!

Fished Walden Pond in the fog and drizzle this morning. Cot a couple of taps on a swimbait fly but no contact. Maybe if I had a Psycho trout? A couple of guys got a couple on a small jerk bait, the largest looked to be >2lbs.

One of the nice things about tying my own flies, is that if I want a specific fly, it is up to me to make it. No lines.

I'm 64 and am using my float tube or standing to fish in my kayak even in these cold waters. A canoe is easy. Dress for immersion, wear a PFD and go for it! No speed boats or water skiers to cause wakes or chaos. It is the best time to be out... Are fish are a bonus.

That must have been my problem! I was using a red fly with water temp still in the 40s.

Took the kayak to Chauncy lake for an afternoon of communing with Pickerel. Unfortunately the Pickerel had other plans. No bass or other surprise guests either. I did get wonderful looks at an Adult Bald Eagle, starting as a flyover, evolving to a slow circle, to a rapid descent and a catch of a probably 10" fish. Despite two other boats out there it was the only catch of the day. Low point of the day was a troller who thought it was fine to motor by with his outboard at less than casting distance away. He got all grumpy when I suggested it was a big lake...

Fly tying....getting back into it.
No glue. Just some wax. And wind the brush with a cordless drill to that magic point where the fibers don't pullout but not so tight that you shear the fibers off... Check this out: https://weightsandmeasures.co/blogs/news/spinning-bucktail-brushes Erik Johnsen is a super nice guy who does some awesome work and materials are first rate too...

Actually the bucktail for the collar and head is spun up on Powerpro into a brush and then wound onto the shank like chenille. It gives a tighter pack and is easier to control. Plus the Powerpro gives it a lot of durability. I'm only scratching the surface of what can be done with the technique. You can also spin the bucktail in a GSP thread dubbing loop. By varying how you balance the butts to tips in the loop/brush you can go from hollow tie to reverse bulkhead to full bulkhead techniques.

It's all I got... The Western MA places are still frozen solidly... Hopefully the warm temps this week will bring some more fishable water.

I caught a handful of small LMB at Little Long Pond last August. The Alewive fry were schooling on the surface and the bass were blasting the pods... Nice pond. - Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
