  1. Interesting discussion. I've used braid some, but not a huge amount. I prefer mono for most things. BUT I do love how sensitive braid is for texas rigs.
  2. I fish roostertail brand mostly. I do have a mepps. For roostertail, I use 1/4oz so I can cast it easily.
  3. I always use both hands when casting, as you describe. It's helped me greatly with accuracy and with lessening fatigue.
  4. No. I am replacing the split ring with braided line to make the lure quieter.
  5. I am going to purchase some red colored braided line for tying hooks on crankbaits. Considering the use, will there be any brands to stay away from? Or does it not matter, just get the cheapest I happen across. I'm looking for 20 pound probably.
  6. When fishing any reel with techniques that cause slack line to be taken up, it's common to make an occasional long cast and then reel up with tension to clean up the line on the spool.
  7. I recently tried Big Game fluoro in 10 pound on casting gear. It casted fine for me without any prep or conditioner. Can't say I liked it or not, as it was my first time trying fluoro, I just didn't have any issues casting it.
  8. Awesome. I'd like to meet a few of them.
  9. I haven't ever tried the Creme scoundrels, but I use creme flukes and their stick worms, as they are available to me and reasonably priced. I do use the zoom trick worms though.
  10. That's the thing, I'm quite happy with mono. I just am looking for an edge for pressured fish. They probably see fluorocarbon less often than mono.
  11. Thanks, I never would have thought to use a drop shot.
  12. Interesting discussion. I am right handed and right eye dominant. I don't see how it could be a factor at all for casting. The reason is that a right handed, left eye dominant shooter can shoot a handgun just as well as a right handed right eye dominant shooter. The only time that it becomes a factor is with rifle or shotgun shooting, where one must force the use of either the non dominant hand or non dominant eye.
  13. Thanks everyone for the advice. Most of the rocks on this particular riprap is basketball sized or smaller it appears. There is a gravel walking trail at the top of the riprap/bottom of the dam, so it's easy enough to walk without breaking an ankle.
  14. There is one of those pocket fisherman rods hanging in the bathroom at the big woodshop. It makes a neat decoration.

After thinking about it, the biggest pet peeve I have is when folks throw cigarette butts in the water. I have a casual acquaintance from bank fishing that does that.
  16. Thanks, this gives me a lot to go on too.
  17. Thanks, that helps a bunch. Okay, I'll have to spend some time fishing this riprap and see if there are any particular spots that hold fish.
  18. I rarely have fished riprap for any length. The other day I walked down to the dam at the local lake and I realized, I don't really know how to effectively fish it. I fished a crankbait some, fished a fluke some, fished a texas rigged baby brush hog some, with none producing. I fished about 50 yards of it, but there was probably 250 yards total. There is a water intake in the middle, so I assume it'll fish like any other structure. I assume you hit any bigger rocks, any sparse bushes, anything out of the ordinary, just like fishing any other bank. But what about when it all looks the same and there isn't anything distinguishing?

Folks giving up the right of way at an intersection, waving you through. I've come to just accept the free turn and go. Braided line getting in the split rings.
  20. That's exactly what started me on the journey to learn to cast effectively with my left hand. I had ended up going out with a friend in my bass buster and I couldn't effectively cast to the targets I wanted to.
  21. I fish a weightless fluke a lot. Right now my favorite rod is an Abu Garcia Black Max 6'6" M/M. I normally use 10 pound Big Game. The reel varies but currently is a Black Max 3 reel. I can't imagine a better rod for fluke fishing, I digress, I'd like to know what rods everyone else likes for a dedicated fluke rod.
  22. My Black Max 3 6'6" M/M rod finally gave it up. Not permanently, but at least for the short term. One of the middle guides broke off. I had snagged a crankbait on some buck brush and was whipped the rod a little to free it, when I made the next cast, the guide was dangling on the line. It had broken at the foot. I've used it for 3 years as my all around bank fishing rod. It casts good. I can cast lighter lures with it, down to a weightless zoom lizard. And I'm accurate with it. It doesn't have a huge amount of backbone for dragging fish out of cover, but I don't drag fish out of cover a whole lot. Since I've gotten a Lews Hank Parker M/F, I've been using the Black Max M/M for crankbaits and flukes, and using the Lews for texas rigs, flukes, and jigs. I purchased another combo the day it broke, took my reel off and put it on the new rod and went back to fishing. I wish you could buy the rod separate, though I've never seen it offered. I do plan to learn to replace the broken guide, and hopefully put it back into service. I doubt I'll be able to find a guide that matches. It wont hurt my feelings to have 2 of the same rod, as I love it for moving baits.
  23. I'm right handed, and I've been working to learn to cast a baitcaster with my left hand for a few years now. I never really backlashed with the left hand, but it felt unnatural, and I didn't have much in the way of accuracy. I was casting in the yard earlier and I was pitching with both my right and left hand. I am finally getting the left hand down to where it doesn't feel like I'm forcing it. And getting a reasonable amount of accuracy. I can cast overhand, side arm, roll cast, and pitch left handed now. I don't do it a lot while fishing, but often I'll make just a few casts here and there. Anyone else practice with their off hand?
  24. I seen one of those in my BILs tackle box. I didn't know what it was and neither did he.
  25. It might work on pressured fish where a regular spinnerbait would not.
