Airborne Bass
well your on the right track. theres 2 things that can be done here. If you feel or see the bass getting ready 2 surface you can either let hum surface and possibly him throw the hook or try to keep him under the surface. To keep a bass under the surface; drop your rod tip to you side and as low as you can get, then you can either reel or pull causing the fish to pull or dive If the fish surfaces I do the following; ''Throw a light 2 handed punch'' straight at the fish. Keep the rod tip bent the same way and lightly push your hands 2 the fish. Be sure not to give slack but not a 100% tension. You want just enough preassure too keep the hook in the same spot. Remember ''You will always lose a fish'' JJ

Boiling!
Fish more finesse. Lighter line, smaller lures, smaller hooks. Watch the color make sure its not to bright or light for the area where your fishing, blend it in!

smallmouth river that is effected by the tide
Not too much time to post because im leaving for a tourney in 15mins but. I prefer High fast moving water for small mouth on the river. Fin where the current is strong with accessible cover and your sure to find smallies bundled up there all day long.

Fishing while lockin through the dam??
We have locked through one other time. We fished for a few but just didnt feel it was worth it. Never got yelled at or anything. So im not sure.

Fishing while lockin through the dam??
thanks road. I figured so but maybe some of the bass that are running up by the dam will come into the lock lol. but as for barge traffic the Ohio river system keeps peaks hours usually clear of all barges. they dont start coming until later in the evening. I just hate sitting through the lock for that long but it could be worth a hefty pay. Well decide saturday but thanks for the quick response road.
-
A Stud or Numbers?
it depends. but probably number 1 because if im fishing a tourney the total weight pays more than the big bass. nut if i could get 4 more 1lbers with that 9.8 id go with number 2

Fishing while lockin through the dam??
ok fellas. we have a tournament on the ohio river Sunday. There is alot of smallies being caught on the lower side of the dam with a mix of LMB 2. We are thinking it will be beneficial to lock through the dam. The only problem is its wasting 1 hour of our time both ways so 2 hours total. Has anyone ever locked though and fished while in the lock and caught bass? Is it worth fishing inside the lock? Im just wondering if ill look like an idiot in there lol. What do you guys think/know?

Question about the SUN vs your position
There is only 2 times i fish this line. If the pond or lake is very clear, or a cold front just came through and you have that "Bright blue sky" with no clouds. As for having my Boat and body in a certain position. I do try to Keep my body with my shadow away from the fish. But i only use this technique during peak spawn or when they are in the shallows and im flipping and pitching them. JJ

Finding Bass
There is 2 ways i will go while trying to find bass. This is where your technology comes in handy. If you see fish on the radar i will hit all sections of the water column. Still No luck its time to move. My first move is usually to a different types of cover. From Grass beds to trees top rocks etc.. This is what ive been doing alot of this year. Alot more types of "Power fishing". Its really paid off big for me and my partner so far and the other guys just cant figure us out. For example last night we were in a tourney and during the last 20 mins we had the motor on about 20-30ft off the bank at just slightly higher than idle Throwing buzz baits while moving. We caught our 5th fish this way but we covered a lot of ground and were bound to go over an aggressive fish. Fish fast if the weather permits. If its cold fish slower etc.. Common sense.

rain?
This thread could go a few different ways. Ill try to cover 3 of them here. Early in the season(Pre Spawn) The water is still cold and warm rain can draw the fish closer to the surface. I would rather not be out at this time in the rain seeing as it would still be quite chilly out. Especially if you got wet. Spawn If you can find the fish on the nests you have a real good chance at getting them. Most of the time you will not due to cold rain, Rising water etc. Usually pushing the fish downwards. But they could still be caught once you find where they are at and what cover they are holding. Post Spawn This has to be my favorite time to fish in the rain. The fish are down a few feet and the bit is usually pretty good. I feel this is because they are more cautious after spawn and feel more comfortable with their surroundings(cant see as far etc..) Just like big bucks, in fog or rain or even overcast days. If they are spawn or post spawn i would throw Spinners or anything that can cause a good bit of vibration. Ive done very well with buzz baits mid afternoon with stained water with a light rain. Here are a few good tips. http://www.bassresource.com/fishing/rain.html

how to tell when its a bass strike or weeds
Well if ur fishing a crank, 99% of the time there will be no doubt its a fish. if ur getting a slight tap your either catching weeds, reeling to fast, or its a small fish.

Night Fishing?
Use your flippin and Pitchin rig for catfish. If you dont know what catfish your going after heres what i would do. Go to walmart, Pick up a dbl Leader(has 2 places for hooks) some treble hooks and circle hooks. Along with no more than 3/8oz sinkers(lakes) smaller for ponds larger for rivers. Also get some chicken liver. Throw chicken liver on the Trebel hook(bottom of the 2 leads) and Shiners or minnies on the top. If your catching flats go to all minnies if your catching channels go to chicken liver.

Ohio River
Depends on what part you fish, and as for Lg, Mouth actually in the main part of the river Good luck. We found them to be spawning in the creeks, Go as far up as you can and pound the shores. Throw either a 5-8ft or 8-12ft crank and ride the rocky bottom. Throw it in any cover you can find. I dont know about you but i get less snags on a crank than on a jig throwing it into heavy cover. The crank should either be Baby bass or Craw colors. We limited out 2 days in a row and got 4th in our last tournament Catching only LMB in the creeks. If you fishing the main river look for smallies they have been hitting well on deep cranks.

How about some advice on this situation..........
were having a lot of rain here in Ohio 2 and fishing has been harder than ever. I have a tournament coming up and the fish are still pre spawn here with a surface temp. of 58-60degrees. I found the fish have pulled extremely tight to cover and fell back to the depth of 15-20ft (water being up 2-3ft.) I was using a jig and pig along with cranks, thats the only thing that produced for me.

how well can bass see ?

Bass forum challange
X2. They've moved to greener pastures. X3. Would you stay in an area where there was nothing to eat? I wouldnt.
-
LMB, 15ft-20ft. Small pine trees as cover. What would you do?
What i forgot to mention was after that we didnt catch another fish for almost 2 hrs.
-
LMB, 15ft-20ft. Small pine trees as cover. What would you do?
honestly i thought the same thing. we hit the shores all day caught 3-4 lil ones. then i rembered what all the orange circles on the trees meant. their is absouloutley no cover in the 6-12ft range 15-20ft and 1-5ft is the only place is cover is at. so i jig and piged for about 15mins and pulled up 2 over 3lbs and a few small ones. i just was wanting to know what you guys would throw incase they get wise 2 the jig n pig.

has anyone ever created an artificial fishing spot?
i really dont want to call it cheating even though i did in other posts but it is an unfair advantage. Its like steroids in baseball (anyone can do it). or tar on your recievers gloves in football (again anyone can do it). It just takes some of the compettion and knowledge out of fishing because you dont have to go look for cover etc... But since anyone can do it go ahead.. Why not take the advantage? Honestly if i knew no one would see me and call me a cheater id do it but around here thats what id be labeled as.

i built my OWN structure on my OWN ponds. i dont tourney fish there. Its pretty sad when a post not making fun of you in anyway, just laughing because what u said was funny. Then u start asking bout my drivers license and puberty. Whats next UR MOM JOKES?
