Texas Rigs. Pros And Cons Of Switching From Flouro To Braid.

Featured Replies

I fish my Texas rigs on

Dobyns Champion Extreme 704 w/ curado 200e7

Where I usually fish, there's a good chance of tying into a few 5lb+ and 8lb+

fish everytime you go. Theres a good bit of wood structure and always end up losing a couple in the junk. I'm debating on switching from 14lb flouro to braid. Any suggestion will be appreciated.

What fluoro are you throwing? It could just be the line...

I tried Berkeley 100% flouro and p-line.

You're gonna lose some wood fish now and then. Are the fish breaking you off, or are you unable to horse them out of the wood cover? If it's the latter, then sure, a 4 or 5 power rod with 50# braid might help you.

Braid is not always the best solution and like all lines it´s not perfect, braid has some issues of it´s own, braid doesn´t do well where there are sharp objects like chunk rock with sharp edges.

There´s a great lake down here called Zimpán, the guys from northern Mexico learned the hard way that braid isn´t the greatest when fishing there, here they come with their 50-60 lb test braid that works so well in the lakes they fish just to find out that it breaks easily and more surprised they got when they found out that we were fishing with 6-8 lbs fluoro with very little line breaking issues.

Most every knows I fish Toledo Bend which not only has timber but it has Hydrilla, it also has timber and Hydrilla together.

I've had bass break me off while using 65# braid, it happens!

Under most conditions I use 15# Berkeley Big Game because it has stretch and has a higher abrasion resistance that flourcarbon. I've caught several digit bass on Big Game that was shearded 3 or 4' up from worm.

For me I fish braid in the Hydrilla or any kind of weeds. For open water like, deep weeds lines I like flourcarbon.

I had braid on my Texas rod and switched to fluorocarbon and am much happier. Any time there would be a little slack in my line I couldn't feel a thing. I use Bass Pro XPS fluoro and really like it. I have broken because I forgot to retie after getting caught in rocks which is my fault.

I had braid on 3 reels. Now I have it on 0 and will not be using braid any time soon.

I don't like braid around wood, because to me it seems like it cuts into the wood and snags more often.
