Can Fishing

Featured Replies

I am sure at least a few of you know what I am talking about. It seems like some thing that a lot of people might have done back in the day. I did it yesterday at my pond and it was a lot of fun catching fish like that. When I was a kid maybe 14-15 I met a guy at Edge Water down on Erie fishing like this and I was amazed to say the least. I remember the first thing I said to him was about how far he cast with it. I looked like it was going to land in Canada he could cast so far. He had this sweet little spot on a busted up pier with 2 pieces of rebar sticking up in a V and he would put the can in front of it so when a fish grabbed it the rebar would stop the can. He hooked a good size sheep head while I was watching him and let me reel it in. Its no joke trying to reel in fish with a can but that's what makes it fun. Any ways I made one of these up yesterday and caught some fish and a few nice cats also that went 5+ easily. I think I might start doing this more and maybe take the kids out to do it also. It was a good time catching them like that and a great fight when your reeling them in 4" at a time compared to 28" per turn of a handle.

Poor man's spinning reel. We caught flounder off the docks in Ocean City, Maryland with can rigs. It was fun.

kinda like fishing with a "yo-yo" reel im guessing. The Kuwaitis fish for sharks like that i was watching them last night do it I may try it before I leave. Iv done it with a can and 20oz bottles as a kid for rock bass and bull heads growing up in the local river

OK, for those of us that DON'T KNOW what "can-fishing" is, could someone elaborate? I've heard of spincast reels being referred to as tin-can reels, but I suspect that you're referring to something different.

Thanks!

Wrap line around a tin can.

Down here it's called a Cuban rig, not an uncommon sight. They use a can or an old line spool. Yhey throw the bait out by hand, they can heave it pretty far, I've seen a few guys using a 2 oz spoon and pulling the line in to catch fish.

Wrap line around a tin can.

Then, how do you "CAST" with it? (See first post in thread?)

After my post above, I Googled "can fishing". They show that you tie and wrap line around a can. The line is tied TO the can pop-tab and then wrap the rest of the line around the can.

To the "tag" end, they had a hook and bait (probably a split-shot or two too), and then pitch the whole thing out. The weight of the "bait" unwraps the line and then the can serves as a bobber. When a fish is "on", they jump into the water to retrieve the can... and the fish.

Is THIS what the first poster was referring to?

Only asking - again - because the first post referrenced CASTING. I was envisioning something similar to my Google search result (above)... but HOLDING ON TO THE CAN and allowing the line to spool off the end... LIKE a spinning reel.

Oh well... back to more important things... <lol>

I always used to just spool off a few feet get it zinging around and fling it out there kinda turning the can or spool towards your target. The Kuwaitis here do the same they hook a piece of cut bait and do the same thing but leave the spool o the ground so the line just unravels.

Well what I know of it and say the guy doing was... Take a solid tin can like a good soup can and poke a hole in the top and side next to each other and tie your line there. Wrap a ton of line around the can because you can cast extremely far. Hook it up like your bottom fishing. I use a good sinker to really get it out there. Swing the line around your head like a lasso and let it rip and the line will fly off the can like a spinning reel. I am no where near as good as the guy who showed me how to do it. This guy was pro to the max and would get it swinging so fast and just launch it out there like you wouldn't believe.

You cast by throwing the bait, and let line uncoil off the can, like a spinning reel.

I've seen people doing it with gatorade bottles recently...

The things you can learn off this website. It sounds like fun.

I saw someone fish this way years ago on an old fishing show. It was probably back in the early 70's.
