Up sizing hooks on crankbaits ?

Featured Replies

Hello, I use an 1/8 oz. 2 inch Rattlle Shad lipless crankbait alot for Smallies, Walleyes and White Bass in the 12"-16" range. The front hook is #8 and the rear is #10. I'm going to up grade with Gamakatsu and was thinking a #8 on the rear would help increse my catch ratio over the smaller #10. Will going up one size change the action of this lure ? Any negatives of going with a bigger hook ? They won't tangle either. I'd say 95% of the time the front hook is the one that gets them, raerly does the rear be the only hook in.  any advice ? -Thanks

the action may change somewhat but, generally, not enough to matter.

that said, upsizing hooks on smaller lures can cause the hooks to foul on the cast more often than not...in that case, it's simpler to put one larger treble on either the belly or the tail...on the tail will aid in casting some smaller lures, like the shadrap #5.

another option is putting a single large worm hook on the tail and keeping or ditching the original belly treble...whichever allows foulhooking the least.

For my lipless cranks I do what KVD does.

Go up a size or even two sizes with a mustad triple grip treble.  They have a short shank but are super "sticky".  I catch a lot more fish that hit than with normal trebles. ;)

Just make sure the replacements dont have longer shanks. I have that problem sometimes, hooks tangle.

Exactly

I like mustad triple grips
