hook sharpners

Featured Replies

I use a small file with a plastic handle.  I got mine from Janns Netcraft but there are places to get the cheaper.

I have two that I use.

1. A small pen shaped file that has a groove down the middle. I keep this in my pocket or attached to a vest.

2. A file about 5" long with a plastic handle that is flat on one side and angeled on he other. I keep this one in a tackle box or on the floor of my boat near my pliers.

Stay away from the Rapala one.

The yellow handle one in BPS is the best sometimes the handle is different color. Never did find industrail file that was fine enough.

I don't sharpening hooks.  You can never get them as sharpe as new.  They are also to cheap to sharpen

I agree with Bud. I have a dozen packs of Gammies & Owners in the box and I change them when they are dull.

I've spent years refining my skills sharpening knives and hooks. I won't even use Gammies or Owners out of the box. You can always get them sharper. Get a good piece of super fine emery cloth and a small piece of leather. The hooks will grab onto stuff like a magnet. I think it's cheaper than spending $.60/hook.

Mainebasser,

I appreciate your expertise at sharpening, as putting an edge on a knife is as much an art as it is a science. I am an amature knife smith. I have Wusthof, Henkel Pro S, and Mundial knives. I use a "True Hone" sharpener to get the edge close then a 36,000 RPM buffing wheel to get it right. I will sharpen a $150 knife, but for me, disposable razorblades and $0.50 hooks just aren't worth the trouble. I don't doubt that you can get them sharper, I know that you can, I'm just not convinced it makes a big difference in catching fish. I am glad that you are a craftsman, there are not many left I'm afraid. Be sure to pass it on to a youngster.

I would never wet a hook without putting my touch on it. It just seems like

I have more hookups when I fine tune them. I have got to the point were I

just give the rod taut pull and I GOTTYA. 8-)

I've used one of these for several years.

But, I'm on the same page as Aplster. Todays hooks are pretty darned sharp, right out of the box. And, they are cheap enough to just swap out if they get dull. I rarely sharpen one any more, but when I do, the Gerber tool does a nice job, and it's big enough to do it comfortably.

Ive seen alot of pros sharpening hooks(vandam, swindle, hackney, evers, etc) but then i hear its not good to do (even before this post) Vandam comes to MI for BPS spring event and another expo so if i see him at one of those again ill get his oppinion you cant go wrong with his what he says :)

I would say some of the guys in here are good at sharpening hooks but, for me, nada, when it is dull it goes in the trash and another fresh one is put on. They are not that expensive that I am going to risk losing a fish over one of my butcher jobs on a hook. :)
