Old/ Cheap Spinning Rigs And Tips For Distance And Accuracy

Featured Replies

I, as my handle can attest to, am a cash strapped individual. I mostly do bank fishing at the moment, and am looking for suggestions on line and maintence I can perform on my spinning rigs to get more distance. As I said they are cheaper models. I know I need to invest in better gear but what can I do until then?

Save for nicer gear to be honest and you don't have to go crazy none of my rods and reel combos are over 200$ and they work just fine bps is having a 4th sale I think the extremes are like 40-50$

1. Match lure weight to the rod

2. Consider lure profile when distance is critical

3. Spool up with 75 yards of braid (Power Pro 20lb) or get some KVD lure and line

4. Keep line diameter to 8lb or lower

5. fill spool to proper level ( about 1/8" below spool lip)

6. Make sure spool lip is clean and free of nicks and dings

7. Longer rod = longer cast shorter = better accuracy

8. Feather the line as it leaves the spool to fine tune distance and hit targets

9. Minimize line twist by being sure the line roller is free and lubed, close the bail by hand rather than cranking, use swivels as approriate and "troll out" twist when it happens.

Learn to load the rod properly with the weight of the lure in your casting mechanics to give the maximum and most efficient casts with the least amount of effort. You'd be amazed at how far you can make a cast with minimal effort if you know how to make the rod, reel, and line work for you, as the tools they are.

The good thing is that this is true whether you have a Loomix NRX or a Wal Mart Special.

Too many people using spinning gear don't do this. You tell as their rod whips forward while the lure is still going backward. Do this with a baitcaster and you might earn yourself a bird's nest, lol.

Throw this in with the other tips listed above, and you're set, cheapo set up or not.

I'd put some 14lb Berkley Fireline on there. It will cast as far as any superline, better than most, will increase sensitivity, handles very well on a spinning reel, and lasts a long time. When you are concerned about line visibility, tie on 3' of fluoro or mono with a double uni knot.

Yo-Zuri #6 is 11.9 lb breaking strength and .010" diameter. Fill your spool to within 1/8"

of the lip which is considered "full". Slow down your casting motion so that the rod fully

loads up. With these simple adjustments your distance will improve dramatically.

I agree with Islandbass, load the rod properly and with minimal effort your distance will improve, I do not snap cast. If you have seen a surf caster you would notice it's always a long flowing cast, these guys cast 100 yds and more. Thinner line like braid will also improve distance. I prefer something like 10# braid vs a thin mono of hybrid line, it's thinner, stronger, cast further, probably more sensitive and line twist isn't much of an issue. As with everything, it's personal choice.

Since I use braid I don't have the need to fill up all the way, I go a little less than 1/8" and avoid snap casts, my wind knots are greatly reduced. One reason for a wind knot is the line coming off the spool too fast and hitting the first guide, a long flowing cast vs the snap will help a great deal. There is some new guide technolgy to help reduce those knots, I believe they are called K guides, being used on Shimano terez rods.
