What's Everyone's Frog Setup?

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

I'm looking into buying a nice frog rod. What does everyone like to use rod wise? Company, length and action? Just looking for recommendations. Im not sure if I want a 7' or 7'4". MH or H. And which company really stands out for their frog rods? Falcon, Dobyns, Powell, Diawa, Duckett... Etc.

I have a Shimano 201E7 waiting to be paired up with something nice..

Thanks!

I use a 7'3" Powell frog rod, great backbone and has a great balance too it. Not he lightest rod ever but comfortable for me. Got mine off Craig's list for 120$ so it is in my budget. I think they are 170$ new. And the reel is a revo s

I use a Dobyns champion 736 for frogging, but a lot of guys like the 735 too (champ or savvy).

I use my 735 as my jig rod and love it.

Dobyns Champion 735 and chronarch 200e7

I use a dobyns champion 736 paired with a 2010 revo premier.

Is the 735C and 736C glass rods?

Both dobyns 735 and 736 rods are not glass, they are both graphite.

X2 on the Powell frog rod- love that thing paired with a Revo S and Sufix 50lb braid

quantium smoke 7;3 on a shimano compre, then plastic frogs, a 7'3 carrot stick with a dawia aggrest 7:3, soon to be an okuma komodo, one has suffix, one had Ppro, both 50 lb, i love both lines so it doesnt matter, i cant tell a differance it there preformance

Dozens of good rod makers so that, as always is subjective.

Good 7-8' rod heavy with a fast tip. 50-65# braid. I like a 7.1:1 reel so I can

throw back to the spot where I just missed him, quick :) I can catch them on

2 Spro colors in these ponds, black and white. Frogs are fun.

Awesome thanks for all the help so far guys! What is your take on MH-Heavy action for this type of fishing? Just go with a Heavy for the extra power?

Dobyns 735 Savvy paired with Lews TS1SH with 50# power pro. I use this as both my frog rod and jig rod.

I use a MH 7ft Lightning Shock rod, and a Curado E7, 65# Spiderwire. Im not a avid hollow frog tosser, so I will use the same setup to cast soft plastics into heavy areas. I seem to get more fish working a big lizard through the pads than I do the hollow frogs.

Dobyns Savvy 735C paired with a Citica 200E w/ 65 lb Power Pro.

Is 30lb power pro braid not going to cut it?

  • Super User

Its not that 30 lb wont cut it, its more that it is really thin, and the thicker braid is more manageable to use.

Ohhh i see now! I'll be fishing more Lilly pads and visual structure. I'll buy some 50lb PowerPro. I'm assuming most frog rods are rated for that heavy lb line? Or does it go by diameter when using braid on these rods?Because I think the Dobyns 736C is rated max at 25lb or 30lb line.

Also what do you guys think about the Powell Max Casting Frog Rod 7'3" Mag Heavy vs Falcon Cara T7 micro guide 7'3" Heavy or Daiwa Light and Tough frog rod 7'4" Heavy Tele.

Powell definitely. They have a lifetime warranty, if there is somewhere close that sells them, that means no shipping charges. 50lb is as light as I go, any lighter and it gets too thin. The Powell frog rod has handled 50 and 65 lb with no problem and I try to break stuff on the hookset

Dobyns 736C

50 pound 832 for now.

Citica 200E

Oodles of power to winch fish out of nasty stuff. Some people like the softer tip on the 735C for walking style frogs. Though really, I've never had an issue walking a frog with the heavier rod.

I have a 7' 4" MH Abu Garcia Vendetta it a cheap rod, only about 79.99. If money is not an option i would get a better frog rod like the powell Frog & Toad rod.

Dobyns 735C and 766C, both with Revo STX reels spooled with 50 lb. PowerPro. The 735C is a fine jig rod, too.

I use a Dobyns 734 Savvy. I think it has plenty of back bone and I like the soft tip. It keeps me from ripping the frog out of their mouth if I set the hook too early. My reel is a Curado 200E with 65lb Suffix braid.

So many decisions for these rods! Everyone seems to recommend Dobyns and Powell huh... Thinking about going with 65lb Braid but not sure which line to choose. Can you really go wrong with Power Pro or The 832? I never hear about bad braid line that much..

Im leaning towards the Dobyns rods... Either going to be the 735c or 736c. Not sure which one to go with. Which model is better for what condition?

Thanks again everyone!

Power pro is the deal for the price IMHO can't be beat, and the 735 will be more versatile for other applications where as te 736 will be frogs and punching pretty much exclusively

Dobyns 735 Savvy paired with Lews TS1SH with 50# power pro. I use this as both my frog rod and jig rod.

Same exact setup I use
