Help With Baitcaster Setup

Featured Replies

Hi guys -

I have decided to get a baitcaster. I am going to be using it for topwater and some shakey heads. I will be casting into heavy cover so i would like braided line not sure what lb test.

I am thinking about the revo sx by Abu Garcia. Anyone ever try that? Good for a beginner?

I also am not sure what rod. I have been using ugly stik's a long part of my life. What kind of length and action should i get? Any suggestions?

Thanks

For shakey heads and top water I would go for a mh or m power rod with a fast tip. The fast action and braid might be a slight irritation with buzz baits, but a good leader or a good hesitation will make up for that. A moderatly priced rod will suit your purposes well enough so you can get a feel for em.

Never dealt with any abu garcia's, but I would make sure to get a decent reel in what ever brand tickles your fancy, as starting out with a cheap one has a high likelihood of turning you off to em real quick.

The Revo SX is not probably going to be the best choice for a beginner. The Revo STX or Premier would be if you like the looks of the Revos. But their are plenty of other reels in that price range as well.

For a rod you will probably want a 6' 6" to 7' M/F to MH/F depending on the brand you like,

For line if you want to use braid I would go with 30 to 40 lbs braid and their are a lot of great braided line companies out their, Power Pro, Suffix, Daiwa etc...

Wouldnt bother with the SX. Its magnetic braking system isnt good for beginners. I would stick to something with a Cent. brake system. Im an avid Shimano user, and have fished them since I was 11, which is when I bought my fist Curado. I have tried all the other brands, including the Lews, since someone was nice enough to let me cast 1 a few times, and I personally think you cant go wrong with Shimano. Shimano has been around for a long time, and always top shelf performance. I would suggest the Curado if your going to spend the money in that price range for an SX. As far as shakey head and topwater, 2 completely different presentations, 2 completely dedicated rigs. If you want something to be an all around type deal, get the Curado 200G7, put it on a Shimano Sellus MH rod, and spool it up with some 12or15# Yozuri, and have at it. That will keep you around $220. If you want a better rod, than step up to Abu Garcia Veritas.

Welcome to this site. Lots of great information. Be sure to look at the Fishing Articles at the top of the page.

Can't help with the rod suggestion, but I have to agree about Shimano reels. I started with Diawas and their magnetic brakes. Have several plus a pre '10 model STX. I used my first Shimano on the very last day I fished last year. I have to agree they would be easier to learn on than a reel with magnetic brakes only. If you go with a Revo, then I would look at one with dual brakes.
