Just bought a new Gen 1 Revo SX from Dicks Sporting Goods for 25% off. I like the reel a lot but it does have it's issues when casting light lures into a brisk wind.

Does anyone have any info on what exact changes were made from generation to generation?

I have searched but can not find any specific info.

Maybe if some good changes have been made I'll send it in to ABU and have it updated.

Most all baitcasting reels have issues "casting light lures into brisk winds", even the BC reels built for light lines.

Must be why god created spinning gear!...

regarding the SX, for the second generation they changed from frame material to xcraftic, added red trim and the bent handle/drag star. for the third generation, they changed the profile to smaller and lower and, most importantly, changed the magnetic braking system from the linear mag system to their magtrax system.

If the frame is some sort of graphite on the gen 1 SX and it has the linear mag break, it seems to me that a Promax 2 with the same frame material and the magtrax break might be just as good for less retail money.

abu garcia actually made a running change in the gen1 revos...they were first released with aluminum frames and changed to x-craftic toward the end of their lifecycle...they didn't even change the model numbers, only adding a little "x-crafic" sticker on the box. all gen2 revo frames were x-craftic. the big difference between the max series and the revos are the one-piece metal frames on the revos. imho, linear magnetic brake system sounds sexy but the magtrax brakes were superior in actual usage...i think abu tried to get a little too cute with the linear mag brakes and i'm glad they went back to something more tried-and-true. YMMV.

Another big change in the gen 2 was adding 2 more magnets to the braking system. That's what fixed a lot of the gen 1's reel tendency to very easily backlash. The extra magnets improved it quite a bit.

I'll add that the 2nd gen got more mags added compared to the first. OP You could try ordering the gen2 innards? I upgraded my gen1 and it did get better.

Gen 1 SX used a single piece spool shaft, Gen 2 used the Infinni spool design.

This post is extremely misleading. At some point next fall I intend to start a youtube " Fishing gear review" series. 

uhfradarwill : Seems to be under the impression that a Xcraftic frame is graphite. All Abu Garcia did is use computer analysis to create a frame that removes metal where it is not needed.  The Gen 2,and 3 both have aluminum frames, the later frame is lighter. Example: under the Xcraftic reel foot there are 4 divots in the aluminum, those areas don't need to be solid aluminum, there's no benefit in strength by having a solid foot. As far as Gen 3 revo's go, I'm not a big advocate of carbon fiber components. These kind of components are strong, and will handle big fish, but don't feel trading off longevity for weight is a good idea. If it cost over $100 bucks, I want it to work for long enough to give to my grand children. Yhat's my opinion.       

The Gen 1, and 2 revo, are nothing to sneeze at. For the money these reel were awesome. If you need to flip or pitch light objects, you'll probably need to bear down on the spool tension, and up the magnets a bit, than  experiment with loosening up on them, and educating you thumb to the spool. I found the more upscale, and now defunct Revo skeet reese casts the light lures like it was made for it. It's worth hunting down on ebay. They are a super reel. ( I use trout magnets for smallies, in the local creek. )
