Help Me Choose A Budget Rod

Featured Replies

I am looking for a budget casting Rod in the $50 range for basic all-round bass fishing. I will probably be using a Lews reel. I am not a hardcore / tournament fisherman and, therefore, do not want to spend $100+ for a rod. Most of my fishing will be in farm ponds using worms and spinnerbaits and casting from the shore. I am leaning toward a 6.5-7' medium or m/h rod. So far, I am considering the challenger ($59) and AG Vengeance ($49). Is the AG Vendetta ($79) worth the extra cost? Are there any other rods in the $50 range I should consider? What about the Berkley lightning (40)?

Thanks in advance.

Abu Garcia Vengeance will run you around 50 bucks, good quality rod. I have had zero issues with mine, I use it for just junk fishing for the most part, does the trick for sure.

but if you have spend around 100, Falcon has a great rod for 89.95 more or less, and is a steal.

Oh and I have a vendetta and I love it, great rod, strong and sensitive. I have a Medium/ Fast, 7' for my spinning setup. I use it to fish light jigs, and whatever else I want to toss that is light.

but for the same price you can get a much nicer Falcon IMO

All the rods you mentioned get recommended. The Shimano Sellus gets high recommendaations from some. Used is another option. Keep an eye open for closeouts. Look through a couple pages on this site. There are a couple other threads asking about inexpensive rods.

BTW, welcome to the forum.

EDIT: I assume Jig Meister is talking about the Falcon Original. I picked up a couple used ones from a mom-and-pop shop for $35 apiece. A steal. Decent sensitivity. Landed my PB LMB this spring on the MH one! :)

I have the old Model Vengeance in 6'3 M and it is a very decent Rod for the price. I have only used mine for Spinnerbaits but it could handle Worms and other Plastics alright even though the action on the 6'3 leans more to the Moderate side of Medium.

I had a Vendetta 6'3 M and they are a well made Rod but just a little too stiff for my liking.

I have not fished with a Sellus but I have handled them and they are a nice Rod if you like Rods on the Stiffer side. The Shimano Convergence is another nice Rod for around $60

The pickings are slim in that price range, you got the Shimano Sellus and the Vengence, the Vengence feels better to me but both will work fine. I understand that you aren't too serious but if you develop an interest you'll be happy to know that the quality of rods in the $100 to $200 dollar price range are head and shoulders above what they were 10 years ago and they keep getting better.

Shimano Sellus, Berkley Lightning Shock, prob the 2 I would go for.

I'll recomend the Berkley Lightning Rod Shock, I have three of them and am not ashamed to have them laying on the deck of my boat right next to my St Croix Legend Tournaments, and Avids.

X2 I have the Sellus 7'2" MH Extra Fast and it is my go-to rod. I also have the Berkley Shock rod 7' MH Fast and it is a very nice rod as well, and it's $39.00 at Walmart. These are your best bet!

Are y'all saying that the Berkley Lightning Rod is better than the Abu Garcia Vengeance?

Vengeance yes, Vendetta no.

Are you looking for a Spinning or Baitcast rod?

These are good rods for the money it was my first casting rod I still have it though It doesnt get used much sense I got my Veritas.

Another option is look on ebay there are several stores that sell on ebay for a very discounted price the Abu Veritas goes for 79.99 BIN and Vendetta's are 59.99 BIN usually.

In that price range I would go with the Powell Diesel.. If you aren't in a hurry I would wait until tackle warehouse has another 15% off sale..

How often do they have 15% off sale?
