Replacement Nfl Refs?

Recommended Posts

My god, the calls are TERRIBLE! I can't wait for the regular refs to come back...

I agree, these replacement refs are horrible. You cant hire a guy to Referee NFL games when he has been fired from the Lingerie Football League. The NFL typically investigates your entire life before hiring anyone as a referee. Most of these replacements would never be given an NFL job.

The NFL needs to pay the real Refs and get them back to work atleast by the regular season opener...

Agreed. If I remember correctly I saw a holding call, on the punt renturner. That's right, the RETURNER. How is he holding someone!?!

yeah i read about that. theres some other horrible calls too. redskins and bills game, the bills downed a punt inside the redskins 5, then the refs called it a touchback and placed the ball at the 20 and claimed a guy from the bills ran out of bounds and was the first to touch the ball, which was false. the bills had to challenge and they won and the ball was correctly spotted at like the 3 or 4 yard line. but they shouldnt have had to challenge at all. and still yet, if the guy had illegally touched the ball after going out of bounds, it doesnt make it an automatic touchback, its like a 5 or 10 yard penalty for that. refs got several things wrong on that one punt play...

The blame for this joke in officiating does not lie with the replacement refs. They are literally HS football refs, this lies with the owners and the NFL. They make billions of dollars and they cant pay the refs that officiate the game. If the replacements continue to ref at the start of the regular season this is a huge black eye for the NFL. The US loves this sport and owners just do nothing but make money and they cant agree to terms with the refs, that is pretty sad.

its about a little bit more than money. the NFL wants some of the Refs to be fulltime NFL guys, and they NFLRA doesnt want to agree to that. as for money, i read yesterday that they were around 100,000 apart per team. There is probably some more things they disagree on anyways...

oh and the NFL wants to hire 3 more officiating crews, the NFLRA doesnt want that either. As guys with poor performances can more easily be replaced...

I haven't paid attention to the details. Can someone explain the main issues?

Also, I don't pretend to know "what's fair" in terms of compensation, but there

is a HUGE pile of dough to be spread around!

On a side note, the general public pays a hefty price to support this league.

I don't think the NFL should be allowed to have their own network forcing fans

to pay extra for televising games.

I haven't seen every pre-season game and I will grant you that these replacement Refs are not as "Polished" as the Seasoned Vets that we are used to seeing, but I think these guys are Actually Calling a Much Larger Percentage of the infractions that occur on each Play. Penalties that often do not get called because they occur all the time, these guys are tossing a flag. Like it or not I say, if it's done - call it.

i havent really seen too much on the details in depth, but i mentioned a couple above in a prior post. mostly these disputes are always about money, once thats worked out the other details fall into place fairly easily for the most part...

At some point, all officiating crews are going to miss calls/not see a penalty that occured, its just part of the game, that i can live with. in theory you could probably call holding on every play. but some of these crews have made horribly bad calls. if theyre going to call something, atleast get it right. for example, a punt downed at the 4 yard line cannot in any way, shape or form ever be ruled a touchback and moved out to the 20, no matter any penalties or what not. yes this happened in a game, i described it above. buffalo had to waste a challenge for the refs to get the call right...

I don't claim to know the details about what exactly is being discussed at the bargaining table. However I do know that the NFL generated $9,000,000,000.00 in revenue last year. I also have heard that the striking refs collectively want an extra $2,000,000.00 for compensation. My opinion is this, the owners come across as being incredibly greedy, and short-sighted to let their huge money making industry fall into the hands of some pretty woefully incompetent at times officiating.

Haha, what do they care? They'll still make money 'cuz we'll still watch. We'll complain, but we'll still watch. And buy gear. And buy tickets. Fans don't matter as long as fans collectively continue to buy stuff. And fans show no signs of halting their purchases of NFL gear.
