First Time Froggin.

Featured Replies

So to start I should mention Im not a experienced top water fisherman.

But after watching some videos It looked like alot of fun when executed properly. So I sent the wife to Gander last night while I was at work to pick e up my first Frog.

I went with the KVD Sexy Frog. She got me the Watermelon with orange chin. not the color I asked for but hey what can I expect. Atleast she went and got it!

I decided when I got home last night at 11pm that It could no wait to be tested. So I called up a buddy and we decided to head out early before work.

We settled on going to lake monster. This lake got its nickname from producing large size toothy fish.

The morning started off slow. Sun was just starting to rise when I got my first bite. And this being my first time using a frog I was of course not paying attention and was starring off into space. missed the first two strikes. One of which I seen and would of been a nice trophy bass. I kicked myself for that one. But it made me focus.

About 20 minutes later BAM fish on! But without anything breaking the water. after setting the hook, Which felt solid. I started reeling in. Then, my line goes limp and I feel no pressure. CRAP! Fish off! I drop my pole in the kayak thinking i lost another one. Then suddenly the line comes back to life!

After a good 5 minute fight I ended up with a nice Shortnose Gar.

Also caught a couple 2lbs. or so Smallmouth. but didnt get the camera out for them.

Likewise. I'm a soft plastics man myself. But I do have a frog. Yeah, "a" frog.

I've fished it, but not had any hits yet. The only topwater success I've ever had was on a jitterbug.

Was a full moon night, cast it out and reeled in. Biggest bass (then) of my life.

Since then, I've caught "some" on lures, but not enough. Soft plastics have been my savior.

frogs are overrated. sure they catch big fish but it's like any lure. you miss more fish then you actually hook no matter how good of a fisherman you are. it has its time and place. give me a soft plastic over a frog any day

lol...overrated?!? Spoken by someone who obviously hasnt gotten the hang of them. I rarely miss a hit on a frog anymore. I miss just as many bites on my soft plastics (which is what I use 90% of the time).

If your not getting bites then your probably in the wrong spot or using it at the wrong time. Most people that use a frog in the right way will tell you that is the most exiting way to catch a bass.

I wouldnt call a specific lure or technique (that is proven to be productive) "overrated", just because you dont have the skill/patience to master it...

I beg to differ. If you frog fish the right way, with the right tools....your hook up rate should be pretty good, +75%. Most misses I experience are just from the fish completely whiffing on the hit. Ask Dean Rojas if it's overrated.

personally, i have had about 8 solid blowups on the frog (spro, kvd, and koppers), but have never landed one yet. A good 4 or 5 of these were totally my fault, having set the hook way too soon and not feeling the tug. others were mid-walk and there is not much you can do about that. it is tough to delay reactions in some cases, but i am a frog addict. can't wait to get my reward someday soon here.

i know it will be worth it.

There's nothing you can do when the fish misses the frog.

I wouldn't even count that as a missed hookup. Now if he had it, and someone sets too soon/late, then it's totally the anglers fault.

As long as you let the fish take the frog for a second before setting the hook, you should rarely miss a bass on a frog. The only time I miss a bass on a frog is if they short strike or I react to quickly.

That appears to be a longnose gar in your picture. You can tell by the, uh, long nose :eyebrows: Here's how to ID them.

They put up a good fight but I bet he poked some holes in your frog :dazed-7:

Calling frogs overrated is pretty nuts...The only reason I miss with frogs is because the bass missed herself. If that frog goes in her mouth, she's going to be in my hands.

There is NOTHING like dragging a ribbitt frog over lilly pads, and having a hawg EXPLODE and take that frog.
