Got off work today and went straight to a local pond that has some monsters in it. I used to lake fish and bring back 4, 5, and 6's and help stock this nice pond. Decided to flip a jig around the two docks and also around the island that has a good amount of rock surrounding it. Caught 4 with the biggest shown below. The big one hit on the drop off a dock piling and the rest were from VERY slowly shaking and sliding the jig over the submerged rocks. Broke a very nice one off right before I left and she jumped trying to throw the jig. Awesome sight!

As many of you are, something about fishing a jig really excites me though it's not a #'s bait most of the time. I feel like I have a good grasp of flipping wood and rocks but I was wondering if someone could give me some open water pointers. For example I spooked a few pigs around the bank today that looked as if they could have eaten my big fish of the day for breakfast. I know for sure there are some 9 plus maybe even 10 plus bass in this pond. So what's a go to retrieve for open water? Thanks guys!

First of all, welcome to BR! Nice catching! I too am an avid Jig fisherman. LOVE em. If there are big fish up close to the bank, try tossing the jig on the bank and SLOWLY pulling it off into the water. Also, check out these videos.

Thanks man! Been an avid browser for a while. I actually have some of your jig vids (including one of those) favorited on youtube. Great material. If a strike doesn't occur once the jig enters the water do you prefer more of a hop or a drag or a combination of both? I always feel like maybe I'm sweeping the jig too high

I let the fish tell me what they want. I start with a drag and then a double hop. Keep mixing it up till I find what they want.

Try a swim jig in open water. Works about the same as a spinnerbait but is more subtle so it will catch bass that have seen tons of spinnerbaits and have learned to ignore them.

Hey snapshot I fish a similar lake often and have a lot more success fishing worms T-rigged with a tungsten weight in 3/16 or 1/4 oz. "Slithering" through weeds and structure.

I find that the weed guard Is actually a weed collector with this type of forage.
