I fish, in what I consider, pretty thick weeds (not sure what kind, but looks kinda like milfoil with some pondweed interspersed (pappajoe probably knows) and my 20# PP has done just fine. That's not to say I am not weary of it and am looking to get some 50#, but I've yet to lose a jig due to fish, weeds or both together. Mind you, I've yet to hook into a real fighter or anything larger than maybe 4 pounds, but up here 4# bass is decent with 6-7 being REALLY good. That said, i am comfortable enough with the 20# for now that it doesn't stop me from throwing into the middle of a thick patch of weeds.

Also, I've found braid to be better for sensitivity, especially since I have to cast a good ways (flippin/pitchin from shore? In your dreams). The lack of stretch means I am not worried about missing hooksets on the initial fall due to my line and I get the sensitivity on the far casts as well.

I've got a few spools of difference mono's that I may tie on a leader if I feel compelled, but not for jigs in the thick stuff.

You could use yarn if you wanted to lol. It just depends on what kind of conditions you'll be fishing in and what you want out of your line.

I use 20lb fluoro

12# Yo Zuri if there's not a lot of cover. 50lb Braid if there is a lot of cover or I am new to the water. You could use mono but I would recommend one of the others. I love a jig because I can find out what the bottom looks like and I have found other lines, especially braid, to be much more sensitive. I only have 8lb fluoro on my spinning reel so I can't say much for what fishing a jig is like on that but I plan on putting 20-25lb on my next BC set up.

15lb flouro I'm mostly fishing around rock and timber, no vegation to speak of.....

Yo-Zuri Hybrid in 12, 15 and 17lbs test also use Braid in 40 to 55lbs test.

For light jigs in open water I use 12# Yo Zuri. For flipping/skipping docks, boathouses and trees/brush I have went back to Berkley 100% FC. I tried it a while ago and didnt really like it. After trying a few others I went back to Berkley and am liking it more and more. The Vicious Pro Elite is supposed not bad from what I hear. Big-O uses it and swears by it from what I remember. BPS XPS flouro Is highly recommended by alot of members too. I can NEVER find it in stock though.

20lb Seaguar InvisX or Red Label for most of my bigger jigs, 15lb of the same line for smaller jigs. Only time I'll use braid is in heavy weeds and we don't have many places with heavy weeds around here.

This is one of those questions that will get about 10k different answers. All are correct as different lines, different line weights, different waters, different reels etc etc differ for each person.

What line you choose may depend on where, how and what your fishing. There are 3 basic lines with several spin offs from each. Mono, Fluorocarbon and Braid. This is what I use and why.

For my top water I use 30# braid. I want a small diameter line that floats and has no stretch. Braid floats the best of all 3 and has the less stretch.

For my cranking I use 17# fluorocarbon. I want a line that sinks quick, strong, abrasion resistant and little to no stretch.

For my plastics rod I use 12# and 14# fluorocarbon. I want a line that sinks quick, strong abrasion resistant and no stretch.

For my pitching rod with jigs, I use 50# braid. I need something very strong as I pitch into some serious timber. Jigs are expensive and I'm not rich. I use a heavy braid as when I get hung up, I can pull and bend the hook flat not loosing my jigs. Plus I want to be able to rip a fish out of the timber without worrying about breaking my line.

That's for me. Everyone is different. You will want to play with different lines weights etc to see what's best for you.
