Fluke Question

Featured Replies

Ok here's the deal. I never really fish a Fluke to much unless its to schooling fish chasing bait. Next week is my clubs Classic and we have a major front moving thru on Thursday night going from high 70's to 50 on Saturday. I've found two bites that are working, one being a jig up super shallow tight to any wood I can find. The second(bigger fish) is on a crankbait over brushpiles in 6-8ft of water, I can't get them on any other bait I threw at them on the brush, jerkbait, rattletrap, jig. So what I'm thinking is to try and slow fall a fluke right in their face figuring they will be tight to those brush piles after the front moves thru. The fish are holding right on top of them now, I have to hit the brush with the crank to get a bite. So my question is how would you rig a fluke for the situation?

I would fish a double fluke with a 3-way swivel. The top line should be 12-14" without weight.

The lower bait, 2' with a split shot up-line 6" or so.

I would just put a split shot about 10 inches away from the bait.

double fluke rig has been very good to me this month. I had never used it until now and I dont fish a single fluke anymore. I fish them over flats, submerged weeds and parallel to banks. I always throw it when I see fish breaking the surface but have caught plenty not seeing anything.

I always texas rig them weightless. If you want to get them down a little faster stick a 1" nail in the body through the nose. If I want to fish them deeper, I just deadstick em until the sink to the desired depth and then jerk them a few times and let them fall again. The best thing about the fluke is its erratic "no action" movement in the water when you jerk it and pause. The way it darts in random directions and slowly sinke horizontally mimics baitfish better than anything.

The fish will take it in between jerks. You will go to jerk it and it will be heavy. Set the hook. good luck!

Thanks guys. How does the double rig not get tangled on each other? I can't picture it in my head not getting all twisted up.

I would go weightless and let the fluke sink on its own. I wouldn't start moving it until I was sure it was on the bottom.

Here's how to rig it:

it doesnt get tangled with the 2 swivels. It might get spun over itself but it untangles by itself when you cast it. One thing I found it that you cant have the shorter leader on the main line. I tied it wrong one day and didnt feel like fixing it so I just threw it like that. It is way harder to cast and doesnt work as well.

Right about the 3 way swivel tangling. One way I do it is a 2' leader to my fluke or hard jerkbait, I'll tie off about a 12" leader right of my swivel and attach the second fluke. What I do way more of instead of fluke on the short leader is a fly, that's called a drop fly rig. This is actually one of my tarpon setups (which I think I'll try today, thanks for the reminder), I'll downsize rod/reel/lure size for bass, it's killer and loads of fun, double hooks ups do happen. I personally do this only in open water.

If you think the fly may not be stable enough, try a crappie jig instead.

Update..it works, caught a nice snook on the drop fly rig this morning.
