What do you write with?

What would you write for a crankbait that dives 2-5ft.?

I use an engraving pencil and write the diving depth on the underside of the bill. For one that dives 2' - 5' I'd just put 2-5. If it's an unusual crank, I may put the brand and/or model name on there as well. That way I can pick up another one if that one turns out to be especially productive.

We had some posts a few months ago about this and some said that they wrote the depth on the lip (underneath would probably be better than on top).

I just recently did this for all the cranks I own, that I can identify.Some of the baits I found on the water and I cant tell who makes em,so obviously I dont know much on the diving depth.

On most baits I had to go online to find the specs for how deep they dive.

I used an Ultra fine point Sharpie and wrote the depth on the underside,right behind the lip of the crank.

On one MANNs 10+ I own all I did was trace the 10+ on the side of the bait with my Sharpie.This way I know this bait will potentially dive "AT LEAST" 10 feet when conditions permit it to.I couldnt find any other specs for this particular bait.

On one gelcoated Norman crank I own,the Sharpie wasnt doing the trick,so I had to get my daughters black nail polish and as gently as I could, write "6-8" on the underside,behind the lip of the crank. Doesnt look the greatest,but I doubt the fish will care.

Actually fish are almost always looking up (this is why topwaters work well) for there next meal so a fish in six foot of water is very likely to eat the bait

Seems that some of you may also add a "r" for rattling, "f" for floating, and are stuck on "s": is it suspending or sinking?.......sorry...

I put floating or suspending on mine.  But do you really need rattling?   It's pretty self explanatory.  You know, it's noisy or not.....

Sorry for my lame attempt at humor...i was poking fun at those that can't tell how deep it runs just by looking at it. (within 18" anyways)....later

I'm thinking about labeling mine with L, W, and S for the things I typically catch on them...like Logs, Weeds, and Sticks.

This might work, seeing as it's about all I'm catching these days.

I like to write the depth on top of the bill, right up front. Less of a hassle to have to turn it over and look and see what I wrote. I only put the deepest depth it'll go on there.

makes sense... fish rarely see the top of the bait so any writing in the dorsal area seems like the best spot.

I was thinking the same thing. Write the deepest depth right on top of the bill. I would think that it would wear off quicker on the top of the bill as it hits cover and the bottom. Thanks for some great info and a few good laughs guys.
