Whats a good action for worm fishing and crankbaits?

  • Super User

For soft plastics and jigs I like Med. Heavy, or Heavy if I am fishing in the weeds. For crankbaits I would go with a Med, or a Med Heavy.

so like a med.-heavy would be a good one

Treble hooks - moderate action

Single hooks - fast - extra fast action

Power will be determined by how heavy your line/lures are, cover present, etc.

This exactly.

7` MH fast or extra fast is good.

I would not use one rod for both. For crankbaits I would use med or med hvy with a med (moderate) action depending on what size crankbait. For worms or jigs depends on the cover but a good all purpose would be med hvy with a fast action.

I agree with the answer that one rod is not the best option. Can you get by with a Medium or Medium/Heavy power fast or extra fast rod for both single and treble hook baits? Absolutely. The problem is what is best for a jig or plastic, and what is best for most crankbaits is quite different. If I could only use one, it would be a Med power/Extra Fast action rod rated about 1/4-5/8 oz. Just my opinion based on my preferred baits. It really comes down to what works best for you. That will take a little experience to determine. Good luck.

I concur with what just about everyone else has advised. One rod won't do both, cranks are notorious for pulling out, need crankbait Rod. The only exception is deep divers, but you have to make sure the fish is tired before bringing it in, or it will shake its head and throw the crank.

If I were forced to one rod I would go with a MH medium fast all.graphite rod, even then you will lose fish that u would otherwise catch.
