Crankbait Rod

Featured Replies

I am planning on buying a new crankbait rod in the near future. Lots of options out there.

Will be throwing baits up to and including 3/4 oz. including a variety of 3/4 oz. deep dives. Have read about many brands including Loomis GL2, Shimano, and Powell. Recently, the Dobyns Champion Seris crankbait rods have caught my eye. In particular the 705 CB (not glass) which is 7 feet, 1/4 to 1oz. in a MH action. Have never owned a Dobyns, but many on this forum seem to have positive things to say about them.

Do you think this rod will do the job and be a wise choice? What are the opinions of the Dobyns Champion Seris crankbait rods or Dobyns in general?

I just bought a abu Garcia veritas winch and it feels great but haven't got to fish it yet. I've heard many good things about the powell diesel crankbait rod but it is a glass rod.

Do a Google search for Dobyns crank bait rods for more info from "better" crankbait anglers than myself. I am far from a crankbait expert but a big fan of the dobyns rods. I rarely throw cranks over a 1/2 oz and only own a very small handful of baits that are 3/4 oz. I a guess are cranking needs are different. With that said I own the 705 CB glass fast action rod. This is a great all purpose crank bait and topwater rod for baits up to 5/8 oz and decent for slightly heavier baits close to 3/4 oz. I don't think the graphite model of the 705 you referenced is the 'correct' rod option either. You may want to look at a longer and slightly more powerful rod. I think the 765 or 805 may be the rod best suited to heavier weights and deeper diving crankbaits. I can't speak for this rod but most owners speak highly of the rod.

As far as dobyns in general... great warranty, owners, balance, looks, and performance, with many models to choose from. I own 5 of their rods from finesse to frog and cranking and they all are a joy to fish with.

kickerfish you meant the 804cb vs 805c, easy typo...

Possibly... but take a look at TW. Instead of clicking on dobyns cranking rods click on the Randy a McAbee cranking rods. The 805 is a very popular choice for bigger cranks and deeper divers. The reviews on their site alone are quite favorable.

my fault, your right ;) i see it, i just automatically think the flippin stick when i seen the 805 lol

No problem at all my friend! I too, have a hard time keeping the rod models straight especially when they are used for both bottom contact and and reaction bait rods. With all the numbers and letters it often seems like battle ship commands rather than fishing talk!

For medium weight crankbaits I fish an Avid AVC70MM.

For heavier lures and deep divers Lamiglas SR705R.

I have been experimenting with a number of different crankbait rods the last couple of years and have settled on S-Glass rods as the best for me. I tried a couple of Powell Max series graphite crankbait rods (706CB and 704CB)although sensitive, not very forgiving, tips are too fast for me. I also discoved that there a some manufactures that list their rods as glass, but in reality are composites.

So be very careful in selecting a crankbait rod.

I've got a Dobyns 705CB and I would not use it for deep cranking, for example DD22's. For deep cranks you want a longer rod (for longer casts) and something with a soft tip, but plenty of backbone for hauling those deep divers all day and not wearing yourself out. If you're looking at Dobyns, I'd be checking out that 805.
