What Type Of Line For Winter Weather In The North?

Featured Replies

I'm in Ohio, and was wondering if one type of line mono, flouro, braid is best for temps at or below freezing?

Does it matter?

Doesn't matter.

Flouro on a spinning reel can be a nightmare in the cold.

You're average mono-filament will work just fine+.

I don't like line that readily absorbs water or moisture when the temps are freezing the water will freeze inside/on your line and cause issues. Anyone who has ever had this happen, its not fun to deal with.

This is why I'm asking. I was fishing yesterday, and one rod had mono the other had braid. The braid froze rigid, and the mono was looping up.

Should I use a line conditioner? Does that stuff work?

I still fish in the cold. On braid I treat my line with Armor All, it helps. About the time my levelwind starts freezing up I switch rods :) When guides freeze up I just stick the whole rod in the water (not the reel) to melt everything. After I've had enough of all that I switch to trolling, drop shotting and jigging. With those two presentations I'm not constantly casting and retrieving adding water to the outside of my reel causing it to freeze.

Yo-Zuri Hybrid, and yes, The KVD Line and Lure does help.

Or you could go with fluorocarbon, kvd line and lure does work and helps with line manageability there are many threads on it and the best methods of application. Mono and braid absorb water readily with braid being the worst imho. There will still always be surface freezing on the line, guides and whatever other surfaces water touches.

move south lol

I use trilene micro ice in 2lb test, but then again I am walking on the water and fishing out of a 5" hole.

I fish copoly or fluoro in winter. Some L&L will help but if it's really cold stuff is still going to freeze up on you, just something you have to deal with when you're fishing during the winter time.

Use KVD line and lure conditioner and Blakemore reel magic. Don't stick your rod in the water that just makes them freeze quicker after you take it out. Also, never oil your reels right before you fish because they will gum up. As for line i think there is brands out there that are made for subfreezing temperatures, google em

All lines suck in subfreezeing temps but some not as bad as others. I do a lot of fishing in temps below freezeing and the most hassle free is mono on a spinning outfit. Baitcasters and freezeing temps just don't mix. Niether does braid and sub 32 degrees/

Thanks for the info! I'm gonna get some line conditioner this weekend and give it another go.
