I am looing for a new rod for next year. I am kinda new to bass fishing, any ideas for a good rod that will not break the bank. i do most of my shopping for fishing stuff at Dicks sporting goods since thats the only realy sporting goods store near me

any help would be great

Shimano Sellus, Berkley Lightning Shock, or Abu Vendetta, all great for $50-80.

Dick's also has 2 models of Tec Spec rods made specifically for them. I know the older (and cheaper) version has gotten some pretty good reviews. Haven't seen many reviews of the newer model, but I like its looks. Since it costs a bit more it should be even better than the original model (which is black).

EDIT: Walmart has a rod made by Daiwa for them. It is called "Jupiter". I have one that I bought and left in Florida this past spring for future visits. I liked it a lot the little I got to use it. Also SirSnookalot (and others) like the Hurricane rods. Some Dick's Sporting Goods stores carry them.....but not mine.

Whats your price range? At the Dick's around here I can get a Berkley Lightning Shock up to a Shimano Cumara.

I just bought 2 of the Abu Garcia Veritas rods. Can't beat this price for this rod! Just got them yesterday so haven't used them yet, but they are super light and have great reviews.

I may be in the very small minority here, but I would seriously look @ the Berkley Amp rods. I know the way the reel seat adjusts can be wierd, but for around $30 you may be able to get a decent rod and save $$$$ especially if just getting acquainted with bass fishing.

I don't really know what your budget is or if you are looking for baitcast or spinning, but I have heard that the St. Croix Triumph got pretty good reviews. You can get it for about $80.

I would suggest keeping an eye on our Flea Market. If you have a slightly higher pricing point

in mind, these are two rods you might find "gently used" around the prices indicated:

Do you have an idea of what applications you plan on using this rod for? I have some MH/F rods for sale in the flea market that are priced to your door that could save you a chunk of change if you're interested. Killer deals pop up in there all the time so I'd check through there and see if you can snag something at a great price.

Try the Tech Spec series of rods from Dicks in either version and you will be satisfied. I have a 7' MH/F spinning rod of the older version and I'm very satisfied with the sensitivity and how it fishes. I use it for bottom contact plastics and for the price it is one of the better rods out. It's also on sale now and so are the Tec Spec Elite Micro rods and picking up the 7'3" MH rod this weekend for the upcoming season.

Dicks has a abu Garcia black max/vengeance combo that looks really nice. They cost $80 plus a $20 mail in rebate and these two alone usually cost $50 a peace. Probably not the best combo out there but hard to beat for $60.

In October I bought the pro qualifier reel and Carbonlite rod combo for $160. It was the best quality for the money that I could find after searching for months. To my dismay, 2 months later for Black Friday wkend they had that combo for only $60 bucks. So if you were to pull the trigger on this combo I would wait for the spring sale and expect more of the same for deals. Happy Fishing!

I have a lightening shock and just bought a new abu vertias(spelling)... anyhow to the story... I went in with the intention of buying another shock because the rod feels good. Every single one I picked up had something broken, reel seat, guides missing, cracked glass.... I wont be buying another. If you watch around here they go up for sale a lot too, that tells me its not a great rod for $50. I have an older IM4 field and stream rod thats going on 6+ years. I would have two but I broke the tip off the other in a car and chucked it in the trash. That rod I paid $20 for, sure its not a dream to cast but it works and has put some really nice fish in the boat. Its stiff, rated at a medium action which to me it feels like a heavy compared to newer rods.

I just picked up the 7' 3" MH/F Tec Sec Elite Micro guide rod from Dick's on sale for $60 and it's normally an $80 rod. I ended up getting an additional $10 off thanks to Diggy, from the board. The rod is super light and the blue rod color is actually growing on me. If the sensitivity is on par with the previous line of Tec Spec rods as I suspect it will be and even better the rod is a steal at $60. I would give them a try over some of the previous rods mentioned.
