Burning Spinnerbaits

Featured Replies

I was just wondering under what condition do you burn spinnerbaits and when you do burn spinnerbaits what one do you use?

Thanks, Nick

I usually start burning spinnerbaits in the post spawn on through fall. For me, they excell in clear water in the summer around all kinds of cover but I like throwing them over grass the best. In that condition, I like a spinnerbait with a translucent skirt with double silver willowleaf blades.

i was just watching strike king pro team journal earlier this week and Kevin Van Dam and some guy were burning sexy shad spinbaits on kentucky lake with good success on both large and small mouth. i cant remember the exact conditions though. they noted the spinner bait had narrow blades for a tighter spin to keep them under water better while burning them and that the wire was adjustable to suit your needs. you may want to check it out. i know it was the great KVD but it was on an every day lake and not some stocked private bass haven. one of the better SK Pro Journal episodes ive seen, and was informative

Burning spinnerbaits can be effective any time the fish are actively feeding, especially when the baitfish are near the surface.  I like to give a little pause here and there, crank a few times and then pause, make the bait stand out and seem injured.

I have caught fish burining spinnerbaits all the way down to 43 degree water temps, its great when they are actively feeding, but also great when you need a reaction strike to get them to go. They don't have much time to decide if they want to eat it or not, when they decide to eat it though watch out! They will try to rip the rod out of your hands!

For me I think 55+ degrees. The spinnerbait is your preference...but atleast one willowleaf will help keep it shallow for you.

Don't get rapped up in the high speed reel thing either. IMO you give up too much fighting power when it is much needed over the weedbed. As soon as the bait hits the water, start reeling and keep your rod up. You'll get the knack of the bait and outfit combo within a few casts. Keep the blades "rippling" the water or just below that point...sometimes you are better off ticking the weeds.

It is a fun and easy way to catch fish if they are on to that pattern...don't "die" on it. After a high pressure system or very sunny day the fish bury in the weeds rather than "float" in them.

USE A TRAILER HOOK!

I firmly believe KVD could burn a sexy shad painted dog turd through a puddle in a Kmart parking lot and catch something. It's more about the man and his technique than the particular spinnerbait he has tied on at the time.

The lake (pond) I typically fish is very shallow and weedy with slightly stained water. If you don't burn it, you'll catch nothing but green slime.

I've had best luck with a Stanley Wedge in Golden Bream (gold willow/willow) with a short piece of Green Sunfish colored ring worm or green pumpkin/chartruse hook-tail worm as a trailer.

I really like burning a spinnerbait anytime the water is over 60 degrees and sunny skies.  As far as what kind, I like the war eagle screaming eagle double willow blade.  They seem to stay down in the water no matter how fast you retrieve them.

Under pre-frontal conditions especially when there is a chop on the water causing the blades break the surface occasionally.

I agree with Catt with a little sun and a small breeze is the best for me and I like to use the Terminator Titanium series shaft seems to hold more true when you are burning through trees, stumps etc blade selection I like at least one willow leaf and the chartreuse/white skirt
