Or a super fine sandpaper and then cork sealer. Always worked well on my fly rods.

I will be using Mr clean magic eraser to clean my cork handled rods this season. Upon completion I will be applying U40 cork sealant to the rod. The product helps seal the corks and prevent deterioration. It is $6 a bottle and you can purchase it the tackletrap. Also on that site it notes how to apply the product as well.

Magic eraser works well.  Denatured alcohol works too, but the negative it makes some of the nooks and crannies of the cork a bit darker.

Here's how Mike from DVT taught me:

 

Magic Eraser to get all the gunk off, and restore color. 

Knock out all the loose chucks of filler.

Use Honey Oak Elmer's wood filler to fill in the cracks.

An old credit card works well for this.

You might need two or three applications if it's a deep crack.

Sand with 220g sandpaper.

Wipe clean with tack cloth.

Coat with U-40.

 

This process will last you about two seasons worth of hard fishing.

did this for the first time on all my cork handles.....they look and feel brand new..

I wouldn't try it on a very nice rod. I think it would probably dry the Eva out and try to take off the color. This is just my guess though.

Older cork handles and foregrips where made with better grade of cork then is available today, or the past 10 years for that matter. High quality, high density cork is expensive today. Most bass rods use whatever cork is available and use fillers to make it look good. If you clean your corks handle with any solvent like WD-40 it may attack the filler material. First try mild soap and warm water and a soft rage, this will remove most of the darker coloration and your corks looks good and is functional.

Trying to restore the cork further requires light sanding with fine sand paper.

The Mr. Clean Magic a eraser should also be good, I would avoid the WD-40.

Just wanted to say thanks for the information.

I tried the mr clean magic erasers this weekend

and they worked absolutley great.just waiting to get my u40

sealer in the mail to use it. again thanks every one.
