100 Dollar Spinning Rod Recommendations

Featured Replies

Looking for a light sensitive rod to put my orra s reel on (30 size) in the 100 max range. It's on the combo rod it came with. I was thinking about a carbonlite, veritas (not sure how the spinning is,, might be over powered), falcon, Powell diesel(matches the reel)..suggestions? Medium or medium light would be my choice.

I just pick up, against my better judgement, a Berkley Lightning Shock 7' Medium Light for dropshot.  This is a truly nice rod that I would stackup against any of my Abu's.

My first choice would a used Avid 68MXF if you can find one in your price range. For new rods I would go Carbonlite.68MXF.

Take a look at Saint Croix Eyecon series. Though they are marketed to the walleye guys, they have a few M/XF models that work really well for finesse bass baits.  I have a 6'3" ML/XF that is almost the same as my Avid with the same specs, but with a nicer handle.

I've had pretty good luck with Shimano Clarus rods, although they were the old style.

If I were going out tomorrow to buy a medium or medium light rod, I think I'd pick up that Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth rod I've been eyeing at the local fun store.

I have this rod and I love it. I use it for shaky heads and at times wacky.

I have been using a St Croix Mojo 6'8" M/XF for 3-4 years now. Great $100 rod IMHO. And like JFrancho said, take a look at the Eyecon's. I am glad I did, I picked up a 6'3" M/XF this winter. I have not fished it yet, but I know, since it's a St Croix, it will be a very good rod.

Have had great luck with Shimano Compres. If you can get to a Bass Pro or other store that has a range of $100 rods, take your spinning reel in with you and try it out on each rod.

Get the carbonlite. I own veritas and a carbonlite, the carbonlite fishes way out of its price range IMO.

Another vote for the eyecon.I bought a 7ft lite model and its my go to rod for finesse and ultra light type fishing.

I would also agree that the 6'8" MXF Mojo is the best rod in the mojo ineup. I also have a veritas in 7mf and it is a good rod too but for finesse applications it feels a little heavier so maybe a ml would be a better choice.

The carbonlite rods at sub $100 pricing fish like much  more expensive rods.

However; if you look around you should be able to find a Smoke spinning rod on sale for $100 or less.  If you can find one cheap, these are a great deal for that price, they just dont seem to sell well at their original price and always seem to go on sale but they are very nice.

I say go with a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth M/XF or ML/F depending on the power you want. These are very light and sensitive rods that fish well above their price point and can be had new for right around $100 shipped.

My 7' Medium Carbonlite is 4.1oz and the 6'6" Medium is 3.9oz.  Very, very nice to fish with all day.

*** *** Black 7'1" medium. Its light, sensitive and really good looking lol. Ive had one for 2 months now and imo its much better then what St. Croix offers for $100.

If you are looking for a Finesse Rod around $100, my choice will be Mojo MBS68MXF.

Love my Carbonlite. I Have a MH/F super lite and plenty of back bone. Fish mostly weightless or lite weight Texas rigs.
