Homemade Scent

Featured Replies

Took an old Carmex jar, the very small one, and filled it half full with some cheap off brand petroleum jelly. Then I added garlic oil from Upper Hand Scents. I heated it in the microwave, stirred, added more jelly and more oil. Heated again, stirred, and skimmed it off even. I capped it and let it sit overnight, strong stuff. Now I have a scent that will stick to whatever bait I put it on and will most likely leave a trail. It smells exactly like a Lake Fork Live Magic Shad. I actually made this batch this way for the small crappie tubes, shad, and grubs I've been fishing lately. I figure a person could upsize the container for larger bass baits. I have two other formulas form Upper Hand that I may try this trick for bass.

Is it liquid now? As in dip your bait, or more like a paste you have to apply?

It's a paste.

I would bet that if you added some fish oil to it could be killer.

Hey thats awesome. Doug, the Upper Hand Scents owner is the president of my bass club up here in Wisconsin. Do you mind if I ask how you heard of them?

This is a formula Mattlures posted some time ago specifically for his swimbaits,

but I suspect it would be worth giving a try:

Catch some bluegill and scrape the scales and slime into Vasoline to create a

pasty consistency. Slather the mixture on hardbits or soft.

Disclaimer: I have never actually used this mixture. I sometimes use JJ's on Rage

Tail Baby Craws, Craws and Lobsters, but most of the time I am a hardcore fan

of MegaStrike. That started years ago, long before MegaStrike was a sponsor

here.

A couple years ago there was a long thread here about scents and I followed it and contributed to it and decide that Upper Hand was the way to go. I based my decision on the fact that so many of the manufacurers use their scents in making their products, I purchased the garlic, crawfish, and hawg scents I think it was.

I see, Thanks.

My good friend who does fish the BFL takes garlic and he does smash up the garlic in a baggie and lets his worms in there for a whale. And it works for him!
