Quantum Reels

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has used the Quantum Kinetic reel? They are offered for good prices online, but I can't find many reviews on them. My girlfriend was going to buy me one for Valentine's Day but asked me first what I thought. Any thoughts?

I have used(still have one) the Kinetic.  It's a decent reel.  I have the burner (the older silver one).  My first one the drag failed one day while fishing spinnerbaits on a big smallie.  I sent it back to Quantum as it was still under warranty.  I got a new reel back 10 days later.  I used it regularly last year.   It is fairly easy to dial in.  I use the one last year with floro on a 7' MH to throw 1/4oz T-rigged plastics.  I have no complaints about it.

I have not used the new red ones KT100HTPA.  I've seen where you can get them for around $50-60.

I'm probably going to try the new Catalyst this year.

I was given one of these as a gift this past winter. It looks odd in my fleet of shimanos but i'm going to give it an honest shot. With hardwater still upon me, I've only been able to give it a backyard test (big backyard). I mounted it on an xtreme 7'mf at first and tied on a 1/4oz swim jig/5in single tail grub trailer on 30lb braid.  I've never used the Quantum ACS braking system so it took a few casts to get used to. There's 4 settings and I settled on the setting after free spool.  The cast control knob needs to be tightened a little more than normal at first but after you get it dialed in it isn't as touchy. This reel definitely needed to have it's bearings flushed. After doing so, the casting distance was greatly improved and the reel is surprisingly very smooth. (there is normally a curado 51e on this rod. The casting distance was obviously not matched but if I were to use this reel instead I wouldn't be too unhappy) Casting was effortless after dialed it but has to be readjusted for each lure (not like shimanos "one and done")  Retrieving the lure was very smooth as well. Mind you, I've not had it on the water for any tests. I haven't decided what rod I'm going to use this reel on but I think a Dobyns 733 will likely be it's home for swim jigs/spinnerbaits. Hope this helps.

edit:the reel is the red kinetic that is something like 60% off or something at TW. If that wasn't the reel in question, sorry.

I was looking at them because of the sale mentioned above. I have a Quantum Catalyst and absolutely love it, so I figured I would at least look into this.  When I picked it up in the store, I found it to be heavy and almost laboring to reel. I was immediately turned off by it because I felt the Shimano's, Lew's and Abu's around the original retail price would perform much better (probably why the reel was on sale). So while I can honestly say I've never fished the reel, I probably wouldn't buy it.

I have no experience with this specific model, but I personally won't be buying a Quantum again for quite a while. There are better options for the money.

I own several models of Quantum reels and I am a fan.

Though I do not own that particular reel, the Kinetic model is a mid to lower level quality reel.  Doesn't mean it's a bad product but like anything you have to expect that a certain level of performance will come with a reel sold in a plastic bubble wrap and carrying a lower price tag.

At that level, models from most companies are designed and built with components that match the price they ask for them.  You simply have to decide what you want and what you're willing you pay for it.

I too have the old silver model Kinetic, 5 years and still going strong, I just cleaned and lubed it a moth ago. I have the burner 7.0:1 with an IPT of 28" full spool, it is a work horse reel, I used it hard as a spinnerbait/chatterbait/buzzbait reel and no complaints, a good value at $100.

I definitely agree. I would love to try out an exo, but that's just not an option. The best looking option from Quantum is the smoke IMO, but I have yet to get my hands on one.

That's great to hear - but not be a surprise.

Regardless of the model, using the gear responsibly and maintaining it usually results in plenty of faithful service.

I have the Smoke sl100hpt. I think its a great reel. Very light, quiet, and very smooth. I think you'd be very happy with it.

I own the, Smoke, Code, HPT TE (the KVD signature reel before he endorsed it), and the Nitrous. All casting reels that I cant say enough good about. The ONLY quantum reel I've ever owned that I wouldn't recommend is the Nitrous spinning reel. The one I owned had a gap between the bail wire and the line roller that the line would get caught in, resulting in expensive flouro being chewed up. I took it off my rod and just returned it. I haven't used a kinetic, but what I have noticed about Quantum is that you really feel the difference when you spend money on their higher end reels. I like my Nitrous for the money, but I would never fish it over my HPT TE or Smoke reels. Just something to keep in mind

I too have the nitrous, and for the price it really isn't a bad reel at all! Being my only Quantum at the moment, though, I want to try out some of Quantum's higher end offerings because of how impressed I was with such an affordable reel.

I have several Quantum casting and spinning models and I have one of the previous model year kinetics to the current red color one and as someone sad its not a bad reel but I would go a step above if it is an option.

If you are talking about the red kinetic,,,i think their very solid reels for the money ,,,i can chunk it as far as any of the other after i got used to the braking system ,,,,,i have 5 of them i bought off ebay for like 55ea,,,no troubles out of any and i fish the good old guntersville grass where it can get hard on a reel....
