I recently found a retailer that has a 7'1 MH extra fast NRX that is a dealer demo for $350. Do you guys think this a good price for a rep sample NRX or could I find a used one cheaper if I keep my eyes open a little longer?

Great price. Even more so that they upped the retail to 500.00. That is a very versatile rod as well. There is a thread on a different forum about rep sample NRX's and there wasn't one negative comment in the many responses about purchases them. The rep sample rod will probably be your best "used" rod you can buy.Somebody stated, and this really made the most sense, " why would a rep want to show a sloppy build, he is probably hand picking the ones that would make shop owners want to stock them."  

If you can afford it, grab it! I would.

Make 100% sure you qualify for the wild card warranty***

If so, not a bad deal. Most rep samples are in perfect condition. Much better than a pre-owned rod imho. Also I prefer the blues due to the bare/unepoxied blank. Just something to think about. Is the 853 the only one available at the shop?

Cool thing about the rep samples is that they qualify for the wild card. I picked up one of my 893's as a rep sample from THUT and couldn't have been happier. Looked virgin to me!

X2 on the wild card.  I have an 873, great rod for dragging 3/8-1/2 oz FB jigs, t-rigs, light c-rigs, and Senkos.  But I'm not saying it's a better all purpose rod than the 853, as I have never fished the 853.

Three Fifty is a very sweet price for a 853.....As far as waiting for a better price is up to you. You might find a better price but how much longer would you need to hunt for it vs. being able to fish it now. 30% off with a wild card...Just do it.

My wife saw that coming too. I wanted to buy one when the NRX came out. I was even willing to sell some gear to do it. My wife said NO. I said why not, she said because if you buy one 500 dollar Loomis, you will want more. ....i still dont have a Loomis. Lol

I picked up a nrx 804C JWR that was sold as rep sample from a major retailer. The rod was in perfect condition with a rod sock. There was no problem getting the wild card. If you want one jump on it.

X2 you better believe if I got to go in the warehouse and pick mine to show off, you wouldn't be able to find a flaw under a microscope!!! if you want a Loomis you better jump on it, cause I am pretty sure the next guy that gets a chance will!  Grab it and grin!

Depends on your needs. The 873 is a a more powerful rod. It has more power than than even the 854. So if you are looking for a rod to handle 3/4 oz jigs then this is the way to go. If the 853 is similar in power to 893's then the max weight I would throw is 1/2oz.

Very versatile and sensitive rods the NRX's are. I started out with only one and I got hooked. Now I have 4 and still have to hold back from more. The most sensitive rods on the market right now imho. I've heard good things about the new model GLX's as well. Specifically how comfortable they are. Loomis makes some quality high end gear.

I will say this again though just because of its importance. You need to be eligible for a wild card for that rod to be a good deal. Good luck!

There seems to be some confusion about rep sample rods. All rep sample rods (display rods) purchased from shimano/loomis retailers are new rods with full warranties. They all qualify for a wild card if you register them with loomis & send in a copy of your receipt.

That's the grey area. Is the shop he buying from certified for the warranty. Most likely it is, but you better make sure because you will highly regret it if something goes wrong on your retail $500 rod.

And most likely tax free! I would buy a new one off TW considering the sale they are having. That opens you up to the 893 also which is my favorite rod of the NRX lineup. Just something to consider.
