Finally Cleaned & Lubed My 1St Reel

Featured Replies

I finally got up the nerve to disassemble clean & lube my 1st reel. Woohoo!

It was a Pflueger Supreme casting reel. I couldn't get the gearbox under the handle apart. I was able to get a dab of lube on the main gears though.

It took a while & took some patience but I got it.

Now I just need some decent weather to see if it pays off.

Nice. It will only get easier from here on out. Organization is the key. I usually have mine serviced but next year I'm gonna start doing my own.

Explain this problem you had... did you actually get into the side plate or not make it that far? OR did you have an issue with the gear shaft colar?

Hoff,

Thanks for the reply.

You had me thinking so I double checked & it is a casting and is a Supreme.

I bought it a few years ago & got a good buy as I believe that series was being discontinued.

I didn't know how to take the handle off to tear apart that side of the reel.

I did everything that I could from the cent brake side of the reel which goes a long way.

I have the original box & schematic but that only helps so much.

No big deal it has to be quite a bit better than it was as I got a bunch of dirt out of it.

To take the handle off you tighten the drag, push the star down and unscrew the handle...hard at first but easy once you get the hang of it. Took mine apart today for a cleaning. Let me know if you need any help with it.

I owned a BPS Rick Clunn reel like this once........for about a day. The first thing I did was see if it could be disassembled since I clean all my own reels. After tightening the drag down about as far as it would go, using extreme force to turn the handle backwards to unthread it, and a few sore fingers later, it finally budged loose. I took it off, saw a couple of the aluminum threads up inside the handle stripped out and coming out in pieces. I reassembled it, boxed it up, and sent it back for an exchange and swore off reels that didn't have handle nuts after this. I noticed this design isn't being offered anymore either.

Ahh, i see now. All of my reels have a handle nut, reverse thread
