Guys,

i have a shimano stradic 1000 spinning reel that has an anti reverse problem. The switch flips back and forth properly and the spring is in the correct position. When it is flipped either way the key in the roller clutch assembly moves but it still doesn't stop the reel like it should. Do you think the roller clutch assembly needs replaced? I know it has a lot of magnets and very small spings in there. Just need some advice on what the problem might be. Thanks as always.

Could be too much grease. Roller bearings sometimes turn backwards when overlubed or in bad need of cleaning and flushing.

What series?  There isn't any magnets in a roller that I know of.

all rollers and springs, IF the the whole reel is put together properly, usually when a super stopper quits working it has been over lubed or lubed with to heavy a lube, contamination is possible, never clean it with petroleum solvents, like WD-40 or brake or carburetor cleaners, they can and usually do ruin it.

 

In cold climates if it is fine in warm weather and not when in freezing or very cold tempatures, you can be sure it is to heavy of a lube.

What usually happens is drag grese gets squeezed down there, or to much oile is applied to the spool shaft, and it contaminates the roller bearing.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but all Shimano spinner ARB are meant to be run dry.

That is correct J, a little light oil is usually ok and won't hurt it, and it usually gets in from the pinion bearing,  but it can collect debris, and it doesn't take much debris to screw things up, most people use way to much oil and on the reels with a lube port (the newer models have it from about 1995 on) it is far to easy so many think it is good to lube it every few times out. When actually it should only need 3 or 4 drops around the main gear a couple times a season for heavy use, unless it is submerged or something.

this is the stradic 1000FE. Inside the roller clutch bearing there are about 6 mini springs and about 6-8 small cylindrical magnets. (not shown on the schematic)  The anti-reverse cam and ring turn a key, which you can see on the bottom of the roller clutch. I don't know if the problem is within the clutch or if that has anything to do with it. I just can't figure it out.  

If you pull the spool and the rotor. You will see on the face of the AR pack the words NO GREASE!.

Clean the reel and properly lube the AR pack with a q-tip swab of light reel oil..

those are just rollers, no magnets.  My guess, assuming the the AR pack is clean, is that the on/off cam lever is not aligned with the tension ring on the roller bearing.  If that's not aligned, you won't get the anti reverse interference with the rollers that makes it work.

I have to ask, did you take the clutch apart or try to clean it, and if so did you lube it??? If so, did it work before that???
