I always gravitate toward structure, grass, holes, ect. Any sort of imperfection in the water, I get on it. I RARELY ever crank open water or finesse in deeper water. Only time I do any deeper water finesse fishing is when I know what is on the bottom. Sand bar or something.

Me too, ceptin I'm in that thar Kentucky.

I fish visible cover best but end of last season i started cranking deeper more "offshore" structure and really enjoy it.  I want to do more of that and fish more deep water off shore structure this season for sure.

I go where the structure is - Visible is my preference (Vegetation, trees, stumps, rocks..etc..etc..)  I don't dislike deep water or finesse fishing I'd like to try, but I am a product of my environment at my local lakes. 

I dont like to put labels on it. Because i have to change how I approach the different lakes around me. Well rounded is the name for it. Theres nothing i excell at and nothing i refuse to do.

I tend to gravitate towards finesse first.  As pressured as our lakes are up here it's the only way to get a bite sometimes.

Junk fisherman! I can throw a shakey head and drop shot all day or burn spinnerbaits through grass, but my favorite is shallow to medium cranking. I love bouncing a squarebill off a stump and a big ole pig loading up on it!

First of, I think we need to standardize some terms, for sake of consistency.

 

Weeds, grass lines, laydowns, bog wood, stumps, docks, moored boats, and even to some extent boulders or rip rap are all examples of cover.

 

Structure is the layout or shape of the lake bottom.  This can include shoals, drop offs, points, flats, ledges, humps, stair steps, creek channels, road beds, walls, etc.

 

Structure is usually referred to on a larger scope than cover.  Cover, as it relates to structure and bait fish movement is the key to locating active fish.

 

I'm a structure fisherman, which means I always think of the bigger picture.  Over the course of 20 years or so of serious fishing, I've always questioned why one piece of cover holds fish more consistently than another seemingly similar piece of cover.  Structure is the answer.  Put those pieces together, and you'll start to see where the ideal places to fish are.

It depends on types of lake you fish. There are several local lakes that I fish, and most of my honey spots are located at stumps. But I fish drop offs and points, if I were to fish a different lake.

 

If you are wondering my favorite structure, then it would be lily pad and laydowns.

I am determined to learn to fish structure better at my local reservoirs. I need to find better topo maps, as well as learning to read my el cheapo depth finder. Would love a Lowrance DSI, but that's maybe a few years, or a lottery win, away LOL.

Because I fish from shore, I mainly am a "cover fisherman".

The last couple of years I have fished a lot with a guy who grew up fishing a river system, and his strength is shallow water pitching and flipping. Between the two of us we can usually find a fish or two..

Drop offs and points are structure.  Lilly pads and laydowns are cover.

I guess it would be described as junk fishing.  I just fish and adapt accordingly or at least what I feel is accordingly.  Whether it's structure of cover it makes no difference, it gets fished how I think is best for that particular time and place.

I just like the challenge of finding an offshore spot and fishing deeper water. I completely agree that finding fish as they relate to structure is the key to success.

Really bad at fishing in deep water, maybe I need to try harder. I usually fish covers that usually produce for me, and probably not a good way to learn new things.

Haphazard?

I like to fish in heavy grass or cover. Not alot of open water structure down here.

I get alot of satisfaction from "learning" a lake, especially when fishing alone.  Like everybody, I have a few techniques I do pretty well and others with which I have lower success and confidence.  I prefer to fish slow with weighted plastics/jigs around deeper structure.  However, nothing beats an early morning topwater bite.

Putting jigs into cover for me specificy wood trees, stumps, brush, logs, downed trees. Then rock jams in the creeks there's always always smallmouth in there.

Im a small lake/pond fisherman- usually 1000 acres or less.  I like to hit cover and slop but also go into coves alot.  I look for grass and weeds sticking out of the water mostly but i also look for rocky ledges towards the bank and just go up and down those in my kayak.  Have had much better luck with those then wood so I usually target those.  As for technique i usually like to pitch and flip and use jerbaits

I tend to hit shallow water cover (though I suppose shallow needs to be defined as well) predominantly with finesse or cranks. I don't know if I have a "style"...though I can say with safety that I'm not much for deeper water...particularly since we don't have electronics on the boat.
