Lipless Cranks

Featured Replies

What are you guys' favorite lip-less baits? I'm startin' to use more cranks this year and am underpowered dramatically in this area. Thanks in advance!!!

I have many different lipless cranks. The one I like the best is Strike Kings' Red Eye Shad. I like the way it falls when you pause. The colors they have are awesome. ;)

Thanks for the response. I've been lookin' at the Red Eye, but was hopin' for somethin' different. Will give it a try though. Thanks.

When you said spot, where you talkin' about a Cotton Cordell? Thanks for the reply. The XR-50 looks like a nice bait.

Xcalibur's XR50s and XR75s are superior lipless cranks.  ;)

Thanks guys!! The help is appreciated.

My uncle got me fishing the Cotton Cordell Super Spots this year, they are really nice.  I bought a couple of the S.K. Red Eye Shads too and like them...the Rat-L-Trap is a great bait too.  I also use the cheap ones from Bass Pro, the ones that are in the big bin that are only $1.99.  I buy the white and color them myself.  They don't have the action that a lot of the others have, but they are good all the same.

I like the Berkley version of a rattletrap.  I think it is called a Frenzy. They go on sale every so often for less than $2 per hit.  I've got some rattle traps somewhere, I don't think I've gotten one wet for the past few years.

Xcalibur's XR50s and XR75s are superior lipless cranks. ;)

Yep, the rattle is very loud, I've never heard a bait that makes that much noise. Of course, sometimes you don't want a loud bait, but generally when using reaction type lures that's what I go for.

Thanks for the responses guys!!! Really appreciate all this help

This is my first year to really fish crank baits and especially lipless cranks.  I got some of the Strike King Red Eye Shads and have not looked back yet.  These have been great producers.

Later, ;)

My biggest fish have come on 3/4 ounce Rattlin' Rapala's.

My favorite on my home lake for a long time was a cotton cordell/excalibur super spot, Jimmy Houston Edition. It had a great paint job, basically silver scales and black back but it was extremely realistic looking. It was ahead of its time. Can't find it now.

If I were you I would keep a couple different types handy. Seems to me the fish want different attributes at different times. Some of those "attributes" only the fish are aware of, so switch it up. The baits are all a little different, and while we may not always notice those differences, the fish certainly do.

Thanks again guys. You all are really helpful.

Another to consider is the Spro Arucu Shad 75 & Spro Arucu Shad jr.  I've got a box full. but only use 2 or 3 colors in both sizes.  Don't worry about the "Roland Martin" endorsement, he didn't mean anything by it. ;)

Lot's of good ones out there already listed, here are some of my favorites.

Strike King Red Eye Shad - very consistent, flutter action attracts fish on the drop.

Spro Aruku Shad & Jackall Tn series- I like to slow roll these baits, both run with a nose done posture

Excalibur- very loud, great bait for ripping off of the weeds and getting the fish to react.

Sebile Flat Shad- more subtle bait, some versions knock, some are silent. I like the tranluscent gel filled versions, very effective on pressured lakes.

Yozuri Rattlin' Vibe- great all around bait

I have on order the Imakatsu Buzzer Beater( both silent & rattling versions)- I've heard very good things about this bait. Also ordered Viper Design Risebacker , Megabass Vibration X Silent & Valley Hill Dekahara. As you can tell I've become obsessed with this bait style. ;)

I will be watching this thread.  I am terrible with lipless and only throw them as an after thought.

I use Rat-L-Traps almost exclusively.  I have a few other brands but I've always had the best results with traps.

My favorite is Bass Pro's XPS rattle shad, followed closely by Cotton Cordell Super Spots. Rat L traps are good, but rattlin' rapalas suck IMO. I haven't tried the more expensive ones yet.

Cotton Cordell Spot

Jackall TN/70

XPS Rattle Shad

Spro Aruku Shads

The XCalibur XR50 is fine if all you do is reel fast. Slow it down and it drops what little action it has to begin with. One of my least favorite vibes to date.

If you like that body shape, get the Red Eye Shad or Yo-Zuri Rattlin' Vibe....both of which I prefer.

I would definitely recommend getting a Cordell Spot to start with, though.....you'll have a benchmark to observe just how overrated some of the other "new" lipless baits are. ;) I still use them and think they're some of the best lipless cranks ever made.

There's nearly as many different lure brands mentioned as there are responders,

which sends a pretty clear message.

In any case, my favorite lipless crank is the Spro Aruku Shad.

When dragged along the bottom, the aruku shad can be stopped completely but remains upright.

They're particularly effective in early spring.
