I love the Luck-E-Strike hollow belly...And the Lake Fork Magic Shad. I rarely use anything less than a 5inch and catch small and large fish.

I thought one of the advantages of fluoro line was the fact that it had much less stretch than the same diameter mono line? I thought that and the fact that it is so sensitive is why people use it.

I use mono...but I use mono for everything because I have a problem with casting fluorocarbon. If I could use fluorocarbon, I would not because of sensitivity, but because of the fact that there is less stretch with fluorocarbon. That way I would be able to drive the hook a bit deeper in the fishes mouth.

The stripers I have caught were all caught on 1/2 ounce jig heads and a white grub or a hollow bodied swimbait, not a 3 ounce hard bodied swimbait. I need something that will hold up to me throwing a big heavy bait.

I have caught more stripers over 15#s with 12 pound mono and a small baitcasting reel than I could count. I have lost a few of the bigger fish, but have caught the majority of the fish that I hook.

What about a reel? I was thinking about just using one of my Extremes, but should I buy something that is a little tougher? I don't want to tear up my Extremes, I love them. I was thinking about a Ambassador. Maybe buying a cheaper end Shimano off the flea market on here. What would you guys recommend as far as reels?

Ok...I always thought that rods worked better at or close to their max. Kind of like bows...they are at their peak performance at their max draw weight...

I had posted a question about a big swimbait rod a few days ago and got some great advice. However, the swimbaits have been made and they are significantly lighter than the builder had anticipated. They are only 2.8 and 2.9 ounces. I am sure that this changes things with the rod and I am sure that the rod will be cheaper since I can get something that is rated for a 3 ounce lure instead of 4 ounces. What can you all reccomend for me with the new found weight of the lures? I am looking for something as cheap as possible. I was thinking about a Ugly Stick that was made for the bigger fish like the Steel Head rod they build. Would that work if I could find one that is rated for that weight?

Ok...for me, could you please tell me what type of action those rods have. I have no clue what those rods are that you mentioned...sorry for the hassle

I have he 7' medium. I have fished with cranks going to 12 feet and the rod has worked very well. I don't think that I would want a crank running any deeper than 12 feet with the medium though.

The BPS Crankin' Stick is a great rod for a great value. I have also had really good luck with the Berkley Amp rod in 6'6 medium action. If I were going to buy a dedicated crankbait rod, I would get the BPS Crankin stick though. I think it is only $70! You could probably catch it on sale if you look though.

Can someone give me some insight into what a good swimbait rod is? I am having some made for me for striper fishing that are going to weigh a lot...like close to 4 ounces! I do not know what I would need for something that large. Would a garden variety Heavy action 7-7.5' rod do the trick or should I use something that is going to have a really fast tip on it? I know this has been covered a lot on here, but I thought that since these baits are going to be som heavy, I should ask just to be sure. Oh, and they are not going to be trolled, this is for casting from the bank if that makes a difference.

I was a little worried about the reel seat when I first got them, but after catching a bunch of fish on them, I am not worried anymore. One thing I did do was to not tighten the reel down as tight as I do on some other rods. They do look a little flimsy, but I have had no problems.
