Sr. Citizen New Spinning Line Questions. And On Plastic Crawfish Rigging

Featured Replies

Hello,

A few "Sr. Citizen" questions, please:

Live outside of Boston.

Do mainly Pond fishing.

Use a Spinning reel.

Thinking of trying a different line this season, as I have never been too happy with my casting distances.

Undoubtedly me more than the equipment, but thought it would be interesting to try something new.

Local store has a sale on Power Pro braided line.

Never heard of them before.

Who are they ?  "Good" stuff ?

a, They call the color Moss Green, but it is very close to just being Black.

Think this would have any effect on what I usually catch; Panfish, and (small) Large and Small Mouth Bass ?

b. Should I realistically get greater distance with this considerably smaller diameter line ?

Seems to be about a 4:1 diameter difference compared to just the regular 8 lb Mono that I've been using. Wow !

(it sure does seem more "slippery," also.)

c. Any negatives to using this line ? e.g., tangles more easily, or considerably more easy, Or...?

d.  And, what's the proper way of rigging a small Plastic Crawfish regarding how

     - to place the hook in it,

    - which end goes toward the angler,

    - and Rigging/Presentation ?

Much thanks, appreciate the help,

Bob

Think this would have any effect on what I usually catch; Panfish, and (small) Large and Small Mouth Bass ?....... It will fade

b. Should I realistically get greater distance with this considerably smaller diameter line ?

Seems to be about a 4:1 diameter difference compared to just the regular 8 lb Mono that I've been using. Wow !

(it sure does seem more "slippery," also.)...... more distance and the slipperyness will ease up once it breaks in.

c. Any negatives to using this line ? e.g., tangles more easily, or considerably more easy, Or...? may get windknots

d.  And, what's the proper way of rigging a small Plastic Crawfish regarding how

    - and Rigging/Presentation ?  have the claws at the rear

Power Pro is good stuff, make sure when u put it on your spool you get a mono backing on it close to the same diameter.

As for rigging plastic craw fish on a spinning reel, get yourself a few finesse jigs around 1/4 oz

Try the new Tuf-Line Super Cast #10. The coating on this line is super slick.

Click on their logo listed with our sponsors. They are running a special for

BassResource.com members, $4.99.

PM sent. Has a link you should check out showing a plastic craw bait rigged up on a extra wide gap hook.

Bob, I'm a Sr. Citizen too, but your question could be asked by any age group. Power Pro is a good product which I've used for a number of years, but braid has a downside in addition to upside, but the latter exceeds the forrmer for me.

However, there's no reason why you shouldn't have been getting good casting distance with your 8# mono. The answer may well lie in what's called "balanced tackle", which basically means using line, rod, reel and lure that are compatible and meant to be used together. Just a few examples of imbalance that could be contributing to the problem:

Too stiff a rod for the lure and line.

Too light a lure for the rod and line.

Too small reel spool diameter for the line

I think you get the picture. It's also possible that 8# line is right for your setup but not a spinning-friendly line, such as an extra tough which is too stiff.

I really think you'd be well served to determine what the problem has been before changing line and hoping that will cure the problem.

Good luck.
