Skunked On The Susquehanna Today

Featured Replies

My bass club thought we could get a jump on the season even regardless of the temps PA has been having. We fished where the north branch and the west branch meet. Shickillemy State Park. 3 boats, six bass enthusiasts, we never had a bite. 6 hours of fishing and not one boat even marked a fish. The fiber dam isnt inflated and that water is RIPPING fast. I went up around to the top of the island, my partner got a chatterbait stuck. I had my 55lb TM on 100 and couldnt make up enough ground to get back to it in an aluminum boat. I was actually losing ground.

The north branch was muddy, the west branch clear as a crystal. We threw everything under the sun from every angle and every presentation and couldnt even get a look. Back home now, decided I am not donating money tomorrow. Didnt see another boat catch a fish either. My club has dropped all events for at least two weeks.

Water temp: 38 and so fast you could drift 1000 yards in about a minute.

Was an adventure getting back on the trailer. If you were thinking about the susquehanna, give it a couple weeks, its TERRIBLE right now.

I'm sure the Juniata is just as bad then.  I haven't seen it in a long time.  I'm hoping both rivers make a come back in the coming years.  Any word on the weird fungus that's going around in the rivers?  I just heard it was really bad last year.

Better luck next time man.

I know that with our good electronics we never even marked a fish. Now, does that mean they are gone or were they up under ledges and stuff. I fished every level of the water column from one side to the other in both rivers. I fished classic places for fish to hold in river situations, behind bridge pilings, big bolders(when I could get at one drifting 1000mph).

I couldnt hold position for a second in the west branch. In the north branch I could set the tm on about 70 and drift very slowly but then we would often get hung up.

I tried everything from jerkbaits to deadsticked weightless senkos....inline spinners...hair jigs. NADA

Good report, since I am bank bound I don't bother with the river till late spring/summer, I am further north and the fish are still not where I can get to them.  I did see a few boats on the part of the rive I normally fish, typically boats don't have access to this but river is high.

The bite is definately tough in PA.  I got one on the 13th when the water his 42 after that 4 day warm stretch of 50's but since the temperature went back down and the water dropped to 36-39 no bass.  However I was out this weekend, got skunked on Saturday but noticed trout breaking water Sunday evening at 6.  I threw on an inline spinner and was nailing the trout as well as a nice pickerel that was lurking nearby.  I'm thinking after this comming weekend the water will get back in the 40's and the bass bite will start to turn on again.

Are you on the river? There was a MASSIVE black stonefly hatch coming off mid day a few caddis mixed in. My partner said he saw a fish rise twice but it was in a location that we couldnt even begin to fish.

I live right on the river but didn't notice any, I only ever occasionally fish from my back yard as the water is shallow, fast moving, tons of snags and large fish don't topically feed here.  I don't believe there is any trout in this area, I also live about 30min north, near lewisburg.

Water temps are making fishing tuff, got two LMB in a local pond on Saturday and got skunked same pond the next day, however this also had allot to do with the lack of fish in this pond.

Yep getting skunked is terrible....gotta pay the dues though.
