I recently picked up a Shimano Sellus Rod on CL. Its a 6'8" medium heavy worm/jig rod with an extra fast tip.

I was wondering if it might be suitable for punchin mats or should it be used for standard jig/t-rigs?

What else could this rod be used for...would it be suited for anything else specifically?

do not use this for punching mats. you will either have a very poor strike to land ratio, or break the rod. either way it is a loose loose. I would use closer to a 7'6" heavy action rod definately not a MH.

I use a 7'6" XXH/Mod-fast stick for punching.  That might be a nice rod for general use, but doesn't sound nearly stout enough for punching.

A more stout rod is in order for true mat punching as suggested above.

Not a punching rod, but would probably be a great worm/ jig rod.

Definitely do not use it for punching, you'd snap the rod in half for sure.

Sounds like a heck of a spinner bait rod or a pitchin stick for docks/light cover. Surely not punching rod though. Honestly most 7' 6" flipping sticks are not even up to the challenge of true punching. I have found that an 8' rod is just about perfect for this technique. 

Would a 7' heavy fast actin be any match for punchin.

Its a Falcon Lowrider Carolina Lizard Dragger I. Someone here told me it could be used for Froggin.So if its decent enough for that...how might it handle punching?

Let's say your going to use a 1oz weight, 4/0 flipping hook, punch skirt and bait, that's probably close to 1.5oz and already over the rods rated weight. Sometimes a 1oz weight isn't heavy enough and you'll need to go to 1.25oz+, so you'll want at least a heavy action rod. Longer rods will give you more leverage as well.

 

I have a 7' rod rated up to 1.5oz and it feels under power for light punching, but does well for frogs. I rarely punch, unless I see a mat too good to pass up.

The rod I use is rated for 35# line and 2.5 oz. baits.  You can't pound in a railroad tie with a tack hammer.
