Bassroom, bathroom, has me wondering.  Why do we call it a bathroom?

 

I mean it really makes no sense.  A half bath is a room with a sink and a toilet, but really no place to take a bath.  A full bath is a room that has a toilet and a sink, possibly two sinks.  So why is it a "full bath" when you can do more than just take a bath in it?  The British term "water closet" doesn't make a whole lot more sense. 

 

And, in the nautical arena it's called a head.   Now that I can somewhat understand since I have been told, on occasion, that I have my head up my .............................................

I've always thought the term "water Closet" makes a lot more sense than "Bathroom"; and I never understood where the term "Head" came from on ships.  That may make for some interesting reading.

 

However, I came to understand why some use the term "Bathroom" when I found the Japanese and middle-eastern people have just that - the whole room is used just for bathing, the toilet and bidet is in a separate room away from the bathroom.  In these "Bathrooms" you can spray water everywhere and it doesn't matter cause the room is made to handle it, and there are no shower doors or curtains to deal with.

 

The BassRoom on the other hand is nothing more than a tent that literally pops up when pulled from its pouch, but if it's windy you have to be careful because you've just deployed what amounts to a parachute and it can get away from you if your not paying attention.

 

With all the times I've been told to "get a room", now I can say I have one.

lets just say hanging it over the edge of a kayak isn't the easiest thing when breakfast fights back......on more than one occasion i was extremely happy that my kayak had scupper holes

The term "Head" on ships (specifically square riggers) came from the fact that on sailing ships, the "facilities" were holes over the water in the front or "head" of the ship. The reason they were in the front or "head" was the wind always blew from behind or "aft" of the ship therefore blowing the smell forward or away from everyone on deck.

No, unfortunately it's not that fun. The word poop comes from the French word "poupe" which means the stern of the ship. The poop deck is usually an elevated deck on the stern that was a ceiling for an aft cabin and is where the officers commanded the ship.

This subject has never been a problem at all for me, but the power of suggestion will now come into play and I will most likely never be able to venture more that 50' from my pier for the rest of my life.
