Soft Craws?

Featured Replies

Why are fisherman so concerned with having a really soft plastic, plastic craw?  Last time I checked real craws were not soft.  As far as action, real craws have very stiff movements as well.

Just wondering....

Real craws aren't always hard.  When they shed they are very soft for a while.

For me I prefer a soft craw simply for hook penetration and flapping action.  I'm a big fan of the Minotauro Craw by Imperium Baits

Ever felt a craw right after it molts? They're super soft and happen to be one of a bass' favorite meal items when they can find them. The craws know this though and rarely emerge from the rocks right after shedding it's shell.

Anyone who has fished with live crawdads will tell that soft shells are preferred by the bass. Bass also prefer crawdads with no or small claws and rarely eat a dead crawdad. Coloration is the key to the bass if the craw is soft shell or not, they can see the differences.

The "claws" on man made soft plastic crawdads are not attractive to bass as claws, it's the movement the appeals to them, makes the critter look alive, like something swimming or moving. The texture only comes into play after the bass has committed to striking the critter, the colors are not natural enough to the keen vision the bass have to be the primary striking trigger.
