Line Spooled Up On Sides Of Baitcaster

Featured Replies

Hey can you guys tell me if I put too much line on. After a few casts I noticed my 10lb fluro was spooling up on each side of my reel. It wasn't tight to the spool like the rest of the line in the middle.

That should not happen, no matter how much line you put on.  The levelwind should distribute it evenly across the spool.  Did you get a few "over-runs" where you made slack or loops in the line around the spool?

Sounds like you may have a bad pawl, and or level wind shaft.  Some of the first componets that will wear out on a reel, cheap and easy fix if this is the case.

If you reel a bait with a lot of "pull" to the same side every time, ANY reel will stack the line up like this.  Cast it out, and reel in the opposite side.

That's it, nailed to a "T".

JF has the most likely scenario. Only other thing that comes to mind is if you use backing and mainline and the joining knot is sloppy it can catch and make the line lay weird.

I was going with the bad pawl because he mentions that it is piling up on both edges of the spool, made me think that the pawl was getting to the end and not making the the turn cleanly to go back the other way.   I have seen where a high drag bait will pile line, but typically its to one side or the other.   For him I hope you guys are correct.

I just purchased this abu garcia silver max used off amazon. The reel operates fine but like I said it spooled up on both sides. Thanks for the tips

since you mentioned that you just purchased this reel, we will assume that the worm gear and pawl are not worn out.  here are some things to check.  release your spool, and use your thumb to see if you can slide the spool from side to side.  if so, you need to adjust tension knob down to slack out of spool.  this will be prevent spool from wobbling from one side to the other which can cause bunching.  next, go out in the yard and let out all of your line, and rewind back onto spool with tension.  this should get everything back to a more level fill.  if it still continues giving you trouble, i would contact pro reel service in wichita.  kevin rush can probably help you out.

Bo it's not cool to pimp another reel repair service when there is a great reel service that pays for advertising on this site.     I am sure Kevin would not appreciate it if the shoe was on the other foot.

For those who don't know Bo is the inventor and owner of *** Jigs, formerly Perfect Strike, formerly Viper.  Good chance to tell him what you think about his product.
