Just wanted to give you guys some insight on this company and ask a couple of questions. I went on Abu Garcia's website and found their warranty address and sent this in, asking them to re-oil/grease, and replace any parts that needed it. Is Pure Fishing a company that Abu Garcia just uses? Anyhow they replaced several different things, some stuff I knew I needed replaced. They went super heavy on the grease though. Check the pictures below... I have never seen this much grease on one of the spool bearings. I usually strip the oil as soon as I get a new reel, and lightly oil it myself. I know they are a little generous from the factory. 

Any how this is a 2011 Abu Garcia Revo SX, and I was just getting intro baitcasters then. I had no clue how to service them, let alone actually fish with it. I took it saltwater fishing 2 times and flushed it with warm water. Used it less than 100 fishing trips since I bought it, but it seems to have taken a pretty hard hit from not servicing it regularly. You can see below the parts list that were replaced and the old parts they took out a gave me. Total was $45.35 shipped back. Is that expensive for what they replaced and serviced; I have never sent in a BC to get serviced... I'm just wondering for future reference... should they keep my business or do you guys recommend I take my business somewhere else?

 

P.S. not sure if you can see those bearings, but they are rusted... 

 

 

 

 

Pure is Abu's parent company (Berkley, Stren, Sebile, Spiderwire, Penn, Fenwick, Johnson, and Pflueger as well).

Yeah that's a lot of grease in there.

That would be $20.00 for the R&R with servicing a neglected reel over the parts pricing. $20.00 is not out of line for a full service clean and lube, especially with replacing corroded parts. I have had reels that were contaminated with saltwater which made disassemble and bearing removal a real bear, and in those cases I usually contact the owner and inform them of the damaged parts and give them an estimate if I require an additional labor charge, over the standard servicing price. This eliminates any uncomfortable billing with the customer. I am sure others do the same as there can be some extra time involved freeing corroded and rusted parts, on top of a regular cleaning and service.

I didn't mine paying anything around $50, but if it was around $80-100 I would have been more worried. I know the reel took some damage... I didn't throughly clean it for 2 years, but then again i never fished that much with it.

 

The initial servicing is $20, and the rest was in parts, although they gave me several parts for free.

Good point... I didn't even think of the extra hassle they might have encountered with corroded parts. Thanks for bringing that up. The reel feels brand new... maybe a little too new... lol

I've had nothing but excellent service from Pure Fishing. I've sent them quite a few of my Abu spinning reels.  Anywhere from a general cleaning to dunked reel off the beach with sand in it.  All but once have they not replaced my reels with a new, that reel was serviced and sent back no charge, each and every time they have paid the shipping back too.  I use Sorons which are not the bottom of the line and the reels were off warranty.  I for one would never complain about them, I'm very pleased.  I will say if I'm interested in a quick turn around time or I'm dealing with another brand I use a local repair shop.  Only negative may be available parts, small companies just don't stock everything.

Level wind parts are high wear items and corossion can account for the rest. The charges are not out of line. I agree that they way over lube just like the factory. I would be surprised though if they spend the time and attention to detail that I and the other shop owner-operators do on each service.

You say after using it in salty water you "flushed it with warm water"?  What do you mean?  Really anything more than whipping with a wet soapy cloth can and does force the salt, dirt and the water into places you don't want it to go.  Check into SaltAway to spritz on to you reel after salt use.
