Early Yearslump

Featured Replies

I live on a small lake, but mostly fish texas rig on the shore.  But this spring the weather has been very "out of the norm" meaning very cold.  It is finaly now just warming up, so does anybody have any ideas on what to use? I know this is  broad but I would really appreciate any help!

Whats the water clarity and cover like?

I'm still sitting at 1.5 pounds for my bigest of 2013.

It's been a tough spring for me as well. We had snow all the way into early May and now it's supposed to be in the 90's next week. I've been catching fish on a little bit of everything but a jig and a swimbait have been putting a lot of fish in the boat for me this year.

Just keep doing what you're comfortable with. If you can catch 'em on Texas rigged plastic, just keep working it. Try different presentations, slower or faster, weighted or weightless. You'll get them to bite. I was out this weekend trying everything and didn't catch any until I went with what I was most confident in....a Texas rigged Pit Boss and a Texas rigged worm. After that, they started biting. Even the crappies were hitting it.

Same here.  That May snow was a surprise.  I've put fish in the boat but the biggest have only been around 4 lbs which has been somewhat frustrating.  I've found myself pushing a little bit.  Yesterday, I hung a fish that felt good, but being a bit anxious I horsed it and lost it.  It took a leap and looked like it could have been my first for the year over 5 lbs.  I felt like sticking my head in the water and drowning myself.

I've been lucky in the big fish department. Living in Kansas and having 2 fish over 7 1/2 pounds, one of those closer to 8 than 7.5, by March is a pretty good start.

i had a slow start due to colder weather also. but in the last mo. alone ive had 2 6lbs 5/6 5lbs and several 3-4 lbs. just stick to what you have the most confidence in . for me thats stik worms rigged wacky weightless and t rigged with 1/4 weight . or a chatterbait .
