VMC Sure Set Hooks

Featured Replies

Are the VMC Sure Set hooks as good as they claim they are?

I like mine a lot I have them on two of my poppers, and I like them a lot. I have cot a ton of fish on my Rapala DT 6 but that doesn't mean that is why I caught them though

They sure suck.  All fur coat and no trousers.

I really do like those Owner hooks too, I put those on my Red Eye Shads

As they come standard on some crankbaits (Rapala's mostly) I have had no issues with them. As for strength, I throwing them on a softer cranking stick and mono so I'm looking for hooking and holding ability and not really strength. They seem to hook and hold as well as any regular style quality hook.

I did have a sure set treble do a nice job on my thumb recently . . .

I've grown to like them. Don't think they're necessary on the front hook hanger though, so I remove and replace those with Owner or Gammis and just leave the rear SureSet in place. I then take the removed SureSet from the front of the crank and use it on the back of other brands of cranks, as well as topwaters, too. Makes them go a long way. I've paid enough attention when fishing to have noticed several fish that I otherwise wouldn't have caught because they were only stuck by the extended SS hook - might get you an extra dozen or so bass a year to the boat depending.

One thing is sure for me, those Sure Set hook are purty darn sure setting for wood in my everyday lake  >:P . I have replaced them for normal trebles in my cranks that came with them.

I personally do not care for them.

I removed them from all the crankbaits that had them. I too found that the sure set portion was sure to set in wood/rocks and since I fish from the bank, many times i could not " go back the other way" to try to free the bait.

Thanks for all the replies. I found a store that has them reduced to $1.99 for a four pack. I do like the idea of putting one on the back hook hanger and a regular on the front.  Ill give it a try at a local lake tomorrow.
