Shallow/mod Diving Crank Reel Question

Featured Replies

What would be the highest gear ratio reel you guys would suggest?  I was wondering if it would be overkill  to use a core 6.2:1 or a team lews 6.4:1?

Everything that I read seems to say that the more shallow the crank, the faster gear you can use?

Anything else you would reccomend?

What crank baits are planning on using?

mostly square bills, ranging from 3/8-5/8.

6.x.1 will be just fine with square bill cranks.

even a 7:1 will work for squarebills. I use a a reel /w 25 ipt which is i think a 6:3. i use shimano 50 size reels for squrebills and shallow/mid depth cranks. the 200 works fine in the 7:1 for shallow cranks but I just like 50's more as I don't need to slow down as much.

A real low ratio/IPT reel is helpful when deep cranking or throwing really big deep spinners with a lot of resistance. Otherwise the everyday reels mentioned work fine.

Like others said a 6.4 or 7:1  I prefer the 6.4 gear ratio because I have hard time slowing down and the 6.4 keeps me from retrieving the bait to fast. Some people like the 7:1 and they just slow there reeling down to control the retrieval speed.

Chronarch 50E, Curado 50e, Scorpion 1000XT, TD-Z 105H, Conquest 50, etc.
