Low Drag

Featured Replies

When i fish for bluegill i like a challenge. So i set my drag really low. Does anybody else do this?

I use to fish for them with 2lb test and a super ultralight rod (old Abu Colon(sp?) rod that was like a buggy whip) A big bluegill can break 2lb test really easy if you're not careful.

Conventional wisdom is setting the drag to the line, I would think if targeting bluegills one would be using light line and a ul or light set up.  Even if the line was as heavy as 6lb that still is only 2# of drag at the most, which is a light drag.  My assumption would be that most set the drag light for bluegill.

I agree with Snook. I try to set to the line I'm using. I like a good fight, but, I always try to land fish fairly quick. In the land of musky I've learned the toll a fight can put on a fish and a quick catch and release puts less stress on them.

There are situations when the drag to line setting may not work.  We have species down here than can strip out line greater than the amount of drag that can be applied on the reel, especially fish caught in some heavier current, and they aren't always big fish.  Being in an area where it isn't possible to run the fish down by boat or chase after it on foot, without increasing the drag the chances of landing them become greatly reduced.

I use 2lb. test line and ultralight gear when targeting Sunfish (Makes it real exciting when a larger type of fish takes the lure though !!)
