Rod Advice!

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I'm a newer fisherman and I've become interested in investing in a starting baitcaster setup. I've decided to go with an Abu Revo S for my reel but that is subject to change if you guys feel necessary.

So all I need is the rod, I mainly fish with Soft Plastics so i was thinking something like a 6'3 medium action rod?

I'd like the pole to be around $80 or under so the whole package would be around $200, thanks!

Edit: I completely posted this is the wrong section, sorry. If the mods could move it or something that'd be greatly appreciated.

6'3 is very short. Most casting rods will be 6'6 at the shortest. I'd go with a 7' mh/f rod. The academy ethos rod has been spoken of highly and is pretty inexpensive.

7-foot medium heavy with fast tip.

Check out the rod's "parameters" stamped on the rod to make sure it matches the line test and bait weights you throw.

Get a longer rod than a 6'3". I'd lok for a 7' or a 7'3". Excellent rods.

A revo S would be a great baitcast reel to start out with. Rather than going with a 6'3 try looking for something that is between 6'6 and 7ft. For what you are wanting to accomplish with it that would be your best bet. Pair that Revo S up with either a Denali jadewood 6'6 or 7' worm and jig rod and you have an affordable but great setup! Easy on the pocket but top notch in quality! Hope this helps

Need more details about where and for what you will be using it for most times?? When I'm in the river and streams wading, in mild currents, I love my 6'6 MF, On lakes from shore I would stick with 6' to 6'6" in fairly light cover MF weight and action, in heavier cover MHF, if I was in a boat where obstacles were never a problem,,,6'6" to 7' Same weights and action for the conditions I stated. Both MF and MHF are usually recommended for most weight lures you will use, but I would recamend making sure they rated close to the weight lures you will be throwing.  The 6' is more accurate but cast are a little shorter and good in tight places, the 7' is better for longer cast in wide open spaces but less accurate, 6'6" is a pretty good length for over all use and does everything good, later when you add you can choose rods more technique specific and better for a specific use. example would be finesse fishing deep water over 15'
